Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of January 26

Sam RookeJan 26, 2015

The January transfer window is about to close, and beyond the sale of Kyle Naughton, which will have little effect on the first team, Spurs are yet to make a single move.

The team's good form, the Leicester defeat aside, appears to have convinced Mauricio Pochettino that there is no pressing need for new additions.

Nevertheless, there are rumours that Spurs are still pushing to add a new striker which could signal the departure of one of Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor.

It's rare for Spurs to get through a transfer window without at least trying to make something happen so these final days of the winter window could be the time for the club to finally get involved.

Spurs Ready to Make Destro Deal?

1 of 4

Tottenham's pursuit of Mattia Destro has long been rumoured, but according to Italian press reports, they are ready to make that interest concrete with an official bid.

talKSPORT and HereisTheCity are among many English outlets carrying this story.

Respected Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio was the first to break the story that the clubs are in negotiations that would see Destro move to London with Vlad Chiriches going the other way.

Destro has been around the fringes of Roma's lineup this season. He's made 20 appearances in all competitions, but nine of those have been as a substitute. Despite the irregular action, he has managed five goals.

An excellent finisher, Destro would add little creativity to Tottenham's attack, but he would virtually guarantee goals. He has a dangerous burst of pace and a good sense of anticipation. As long as he wouldn't hamper Harry Kane's development, this seems like a move that would make Spurs a more effective team.

With Chiriches going the other way, this deal would likely not be too expensive for Spurs and would improve their strength in depth where it is most needed while simultaneously reducing the backlog of defenders at the club.

However, with Kyle Naughton already having been sold, the departure of Chiriches would leave Spurs relying on the fitness of Kyle Walker and the unproven DeAndre Yedlin at right-back. It would also ensure that Younes Kaboul would remain with the club at least until the summer.

Spurs Shopping for a Defender

2 of 4

Since the end of the summer transfer window, Spurs have been linked with numerous centre-backs. Espanyol centre-back Hector Moreno was seemingly Mauricio Pochettino's first choice.

Pochettino knows Moreno from his time coaching Espanyol, but the rumours of a reunion at Spurs have now fallen away. Winston Reid was also rumoured to be close to joining Spurs from West Ham, but that too has gone quiet.

Instead, Spurs have seemingly turned their attention to Ezequiel Munoz. The Argentinian defender has been at Palermo since 2010 but is still only 24 years old.

Uncapped but very experienced, Munoz is a tough and aggressive defender who would likely replace Younes Kaboul in Spurs' reserve back line. It is unlikely that he would displace Jan Vertonghen or Federico Fazio.

With his contract running down, Palermo have seemingly accepted that they will have to sell him now or lose him for nothing in the summer.

Palermo manager Giuseppe Iachini has admitted that the rumours of his imminent departure have affected his form, saying "he has been quiet in some games."

The fee is unlikely to exceed seven figures, and he would arrive with little pressure to an Argentinian manager and two of his countrymen in the playing staff.

This seems like a shrewd transfer for Spurs. Signing a promising young player for a heavily reduced fee is always a good way to mitigate risk.

Tottenham Looking for a Bundesliga Bargain?

Midfielder Kerem Demirbay is not particularly well known in England, but having moved from Schalke to Borussia Dortmund and now to Hamburg, the 21-year-old seems to be a player with a bright future.

Not yet a full international, Demirbay has represented Turkey at youth international level but is also eligible to play for Germany, the country of his birth.

According to his agent, Spurs have sent scouts to watch him and are interested in taking him to north London.

With the futures of many of Spurs' central midfielders in doubt, Tottenham could well be in the market for reinforcements.

Former Tottenham director of football Frank Arnesen, now in the same role at Hamburg, described Demirbay as "a utility player who can play in several midfield positions" when he joined the club.

Moyes Wants Capoue in Spain?

4 of 4

Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue began his second season at Spurs brightly. As the team struggled to jell, he was a source of stability and strength and seemingly secured his position in the starting lineup.

Unfortunately for the Frenchman, the emergence of Ryan Mason and the restoration of Nabil Bentaleb have seen him relegated to the bench and even occasionally omitted from the matchday squad entirely.

According to the Daily Mail, Capoue will be offered a lifeline by David Moyes.

The Real Sociedad manager is keen to add some starch to his midfield and sees Premier League experience as a major asset. The Mail suggests that Moyes will attempt to take Capoue to La Liga on loan.

Capoue's Tottenham career has been enigmatic. At times he has looked every inch the prototypical holding midfielder, but his erratic passing and tendency to panic when under pressure mean that he is not among Spurs' first options for the role.

If Sociedad do offer him an exit, it would probably be in the interests of all parties for Spurs to agree to the deal.
