Matchup of the Day: No. 6 Andy Murray vs. Nick Kyrgios

While a case can be made that the women’s battle between No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova and No. 7 seed Eugenie Bouchard is the matchup of the day, the intriguing men’s game between veteran Andy Murray and Australian star Nick Kyrgios is stealing the headlines.

Murray enters the quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed. After blowing past Yuki Bhambri, Marinko Matosevic and Joao Sousa in straight sets in each of the first three rounds, respectively, Murray faced No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round. The hard-fought battle was eventually won by Murray, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5, but it wasn’t until after Murray faced his toughest test of the tournament.

When asked about the crowd support Kyrgios will have as the home-country hero, Murray spoke honestly with Matt Wilansky and Jim Caple of ESPN.com, saying: “I would expect it to be a different match in a couple of days. It was a fairly empty stadium when we played in Toronto. I think Nick enjoys playing in front of a crowd. So, you know, that will probably change things a bit, too.”

At just 19 years old, Kyrgios already has the swagger and the confidence needed to be an elite player. The Australian beat Federico Delbonis, No. 23 seed Ivo Karlovic and Malek Jaziri in the first three rounds, respectively, but it was the five-round thriller against Andreas Seppi in the fourth round that proved Kyrgios was a viable contender in this year’s tournament.

What makes Murray so dangerous is the power he possesses and the area he covers as a 6’3” tennis player. While he usually towers over his challengers, Murray is the smaller man, with Kyrgios standing one inch taller at 6’4”.

Both men have superior strength and the ability to cover the entire baseline, but the real question will be durability. Murray has gone deep into major tournaments many times, but Kyrgios is still new to the position.

If Murray maintains his composure throughout the matchup and forces the game to five sets, he will be able to outlast the younger Australian and disappoint the fans in Melbourne. Regardless, this will be the matchup of the day.
