Arsenal: "Things Fall Apart Because The CENTRE Cannot Hold!"

Akin AjibolaAug 11, 2009

Alex Ferguson admits "Arsenal could be title contenders this season." Does he see something the media and the fans are missing? Well, I totally agree.

Why? Simple. Arsenal has the most amazing number of attackers in a single club at one time.

  • Eduardo: labelled the calmest finisher in the EPL before his injury.
  • Van Persie: the dutch sniper.
  • Arshavin: the Russian assassin
  • Rosicky: the little Mozart
  • Fabregas: Oh, Fabregas
  • Nasri: the next Zidane
  • Wilshere: Arsenal's own Messi in the making.

The 4-3-3 formation can be a very effective and deadly against opponents. Looking at the formation above, attack-wise the Arsenal squad is a handful for any team on the planet. Defensively, strictly from the wings, Arsenal is as blessed as the top three teams in the World.

Clichy, unquestionably the second best left back in the world after Evra (for now!). Sagna, best right back in France before his move to Arsenal. Supported by Eboue for more penetration if needed for certain matches and the upcoming Gibbs.

"A team is only as strong as its weakest point."

In my view, the Arsenal team parades the weakest centre for a big club presently.Truth to be told, only Song can pass for a DM and only as a substitution; Denilson is only a utility player for emergency due to injuries and Diaby has not been on since his horrific injury.

A DM who is not interested going forward is needed to break up counter-attacks  when the defensive wingers are overlap or when attackers lose the ball.

Arsenal's centre backs are almost laughable at times. I have had the privilege to watch Vermaelen play in Ajax and he is a great signing, at least for what Arsenal needs. He can mark out Drogba like Senderos couldn't. He is more of a Vidic type of player who needs his Ferdinard.

Gallas can be Arsenal's world-class substitution; Djourou is still learning the trade and Silvester is more like a father figure than an Arsenal player. An imposing, not necessarily tall CB is needed to partner Vermaelen to lock up the back.

Lastly, a strong forward will be an excellent addition when ground balls don't seem to go through a tightly packed midfield. A player to convert aerial balls into goals.

The 4-3-3 formation is excellent for Arsenal to terrorize any opponent, but it can also be their coffin without a strong centre from the attack to the defence.

Since Wenger likes them young and cheap, here are a few names:

Defensive Midfielder

  • £10-12 million Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko: age 19 at 6"2, heavily built, strong tackler (Recent call up to the french squad). French.
  • £10-12 million Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso: age 23 at 5"11, good strong tackler, very skillful and a freekick specialist. (Alonso type of player)
  • £ 5-8 million Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole: age 21 at 5"10, fast aggressive, solid tackler, good work rate. Can score too.

Centerback

  • £10-12 million Werder Bremen defender Rodrigues Naldo: age 26 at 6"6, good in the air, has presence, skillful and a freekick specialist
  • £12-15 million Fulham defender Brede Hangeland: age 28 at 6"5, good in the air, premiership experience and strong presence.
  • £10-12 million PSG defender Mamadou Sakho: age 19 at 6"2, strong, fast, and a leader. Currently, the youngest player ever to captain a Ligue 1 club.
Center forward
Klaas Jan Huntelaar would have been perfect, but here are alternatives:
  • £10-12 million Toulouse forwarder Pierre Gignac: age 24 at 6"2, strong, good in the air and ground, fast, good passer, excellent finisher, free kick specialist and the highest goal scorer in the 2008/2009 French league with 24 goals in 38 appearances. French
  • £8-10 million Bordeaux forwarder Marouane Chamakh: age 25 at 6"2, strong, good in the air, fast, good passer, good finisher with 13 goals in 34 appearances. Speaks French.
  • £8-10 million West Ham defender Mathew Upson: age 30 at 6"1, strong, good in the air, premiership experience, former Arsenal player
JUST IMAGINE A FORMATION LIKE THE ONE ABOVE!!!! ARSENAL WOULD BE UNSTOPPABLE!
