Packers, Raji Reportedly Agree to Deal
Monday, March 30
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported, "The one-year contract that the Packers and DT BJ Raji have agreed to is worth roughly $3.5M, source said. He can earn up to $4M."
"The Packers have offered Raji a one-year contract worth less than $2 million, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Last year, Raji returned to the Packers on a one-year, $4 million contract," reported ESPN's Rob Demovsky earlier on Monday.
On March 23, Bill Huber of GNB.Scout.com reported, "A league source on [March 22] said the two sides are 'working on a deal' that should keep Raji in Green Bay. While the source would not discuss the parameters of the contract, it more than likely would be a one-year deal."
Raji was placed on injured reserve in August after suffering a torn right biceps in a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. It was the first time in his career that he missed more than two games in a season.
At the time, Raji told Paul Imig of Fox Sports Wisconsin that the injury did cause him to think, "I could be seeing my last games at Lambeau." He's spent his entire six-year career with the Packers since being taken ninth overall in the 2009 draft.
It's evident that Green Bay holds a special place in Raji's heart. Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweeted out a picture of the 28-year-old at the team's facilities as the Packers prepared for the playoffs:
Despite being loaded with potential, Raji has never managed to live up to his hype. Khaled Elsayed of ProFootballFocus.com provided a scathing breakdown of the former Boston College star's career prior to the 2014 draft:
"This is not at all about what I'd expect from a ninth overall pick. I'd expect them to be a difference maker for the duration of their contract. Raji had spells where he looked very good, particularly in 2010 and 2012. But outside of that there was a whole heap of nothing and his career grade of -19.1 over 3,856 snaps indicates he hasn't delivered on his potential.
"
While the numbers and the missed time in 2014 don't paint a good picture, Raji has the potential to be a great bargain in this year's free-agent class. He doesn't figure to cost a lot of money, although he does have limitations that have been evident throughout his career.
