Carlo Ancelotti Reiterates Ramos' Importance to Madrid

Friday, Jan. 23

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed he isn't involved in offering Ramos a new contract. The Italian manager suggests the centre-back is vital to his plans, however, per Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC:

Ramos Reportedly Rejects Initial Madrid Extension Offer

Wednesday, Jan. 21

Ramos has rejected Real Madrid's initial offer of a new contract at the Bernabeu, setting the European champions back in their attempts to tie the centre-back down on fresh terms.

According to Spanish television station Cuatro (h/t Spanish newspaper Marca), Ramos met with Los Blancos president Florentino Perez this week, but was dissatisfied with the wages offered to him:

"

The defender, tied to the club until 2017 under his current deal, met with club president Florentino Pérez to listen to the terms on offer, but was left disappointed to discover his new salary would be lower not only than Cristiano’s (to be expected, the Portuguese striker is the accepted star of the squad) but also less than Bale, Benzema and Casillas. Ramos turned the offer down.

"

With two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract, there's no need for Real to panic just yet, but after rising to the fore as one of the club's stars, Ramos appears to be seeking substantial reimbursement.

Marca mentions Ramos' intentions to retire with the capital outfit, but in order to do so, he expects to join the group of players on deals worth at least €6 million in annual salary.

Last year saw the 28-year-old add the Champions League crown and FIFA Club World Cup to his trophy cabinet, having now won every major title in Spanish, European and international football.

Winner of La Liga's Best Defender award for the last three seasons in succession, Ramos will expect improved terms from his club if he's to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.
