Day 3 of the Australian Open tested some top seeds, but they pulled through under adversity. That list includes Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who all dropped at least one set against their second-round opponents.

Several men outside the top 20 also dropped, while young players such as Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic advanced. There were not quite as many upsets on the women's side, though tight matches were common.

Before play gets underway Wednesday evening, here's a look at the top results and notable matches from Day 3.

Notable Day 3 Matches

No. 2 Roger Federer def. Simone Bolelli, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

Nobody remembers the players who almost knock off tennis legends, but Simone Bolelli was on the cusp of doing just that after the first set. However, he ultimately dropped the next three with just seven combined games.

How close was Bolelli to upsetting Federer? Well, the 17-time Grand Slam champion put it into perspective, per the Press Association, via BT Sport:

"

I was already seeing myself explaining losing in the second round and I'm happy I don't have to do that interview. I'm happy I'm still in the tournament, because for a while there today it wasn't looking very good because Bolelli was playing very well.

But it's always a good feeling fighting your way out of a match, like now, and winning the last three sets convincingly and actually playing really positive tennis.

"

After dropping the initial set, Federer seemed to surge through the remainder of the match. The biggest reason for the Swiss player's resurgence was his flawless serving. Federer did not record a double fault, and he finished with 15 aces, 11 of which came in the final three sets.

The veteran won't face a true test until potentially the quarterfinals against No. 6 Andy Murray. In the meantime, both players better hope they can make it to that round, as relative unknowns are making statements early in Melbourne.

No. 2 Maria Sharapova def. Alexandra Panova, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5

Keeping with the theme of second-seeded players being pushed to the brink, Sharapova was the latest women's player to nearly fall. After two top-10 females were dropped on Day 1, the Russian had a tough match of her own against fellow Russian Alexandra Panova.

Sharapova breezed through the first set but came up short in the second before nearly dropping out of the tourney in the third. The Aussie Open's official account passed along comments from Sharapova:

Luckily, she was able to show the mental toughness it takes to come back with a resounding close of the match. That test has prepared her for what's to come, as Panova was potentially the final unranked player on her slate.

The 2014 French Open winner faces No. 31 Zarina Diyas followed by No. 21 Shuai Peng. If all goes right for both Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard, the two dynamos might face off in the quarterfinals. Sharapova has the tougher path, as several ranked players have dropped in front of Bouchard.

No. 3 Rafael Nadal def. Tim Smyczek, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-5

No player coming into the Australian Open was more intriguing than Nadal. The Spanish star underwent an appendectomy in early November and made his return to the major stage in Melbourne.

On Day 3 of the Happy Open, that return nearly came to an abrupt end. Nadal dropped the second and third sets to world No. 112 Tim Smyczek before storming back in the fourth and fifth. The Australian Open's official Twitter account provided a look at the dramatic finish:

Nadal is one of the biggest stars in the sport, so dropping out in the second round of any major would have been historic. Having it happen a year after he reached the final in that same tournament? Well, that's something tennis fans would never forget.

Rather than having the seemingly impossible happen, Nadal somehow pulled out a win over Smyczek to head to the third round. While he has another unseeded opponent in Dudi Sela ahead, the road gets much tougher with No. 24 Richard Gasquet, No. 14 Kevin Anderson or No. 7 Tomas Berdych in the quarters.
