California University of Pennsylvania B-Ball Player Shanice Clark Dies at Age 21

California University of Pennsylvania basketball forward Shanice Clark, 21, was pronounced dead at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Clark was found unresponsive in her Vulcan Village apartment at around 3 a.m.

Andrew Goldstein of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the news. No cause of death has officially been determined, but a report from the Observer-Reporter cited an early determination made by medical personnel that suggests Clark choked on gum in her sleep.

University president Geraldine M. Jones released a statement on Clark's tragic passing, via Goldstein.

"On behalf of California University of Pennsylvania, I extend my deepest sympathy to all of Shanice's family and friends. She will be missed by her teammates and coaches, her classmates, and by the entire campus community."

Clark, a Toronto native and an academic senior majoring in communication studies, was redshirting this season. She previously appeared in 24 games last season after transferring from Sante Fe College.

The Vulcans are 14-2 on the year and tied atop the West division in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (h/t PSACSports.org).

California University announced Monday that the school's basketball games against Gannon, originally slated for this Wednesday, will be rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22 out of respect for Clark.
