On Jan. 26, ESPN's Adam Caplan revealed Musgrave would run a no-huddle offense with the Raiders.
This would seemingly signal that Greg Olson is officially on his way out. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported on Jan. 14 that the Jacksonville Jaguars were targeting Olson for their offensive coordinator opening.
As Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group noted, Del Rio and Musgrave have experience working together:
Most Raiders fans will likely be a little underwhelmed by Oakland's decision. According to Pro-Football-Reference, none of Musgrave's offenses finished higher than 12th in yards or 14th in scoring.
Bleacher Report's Christopher Hansen noted that Musgrave didn't exactly work with a murderers' row of quarterbacks in those offenses:
USA Today's Tom Pelissero also felt that Musgrave's Minnesota Vikings offense punched above its weight under his tutelage in 2013:
Musgrave's work in Philadelphia also earned good reviews, per John Middlekauff:
The Raiders finished last in total offense and 31st in scoring last year. Few fans will disagree that something needed to change.
In Derek Carr, Musgrave has what looks to be a franchise quarterback. Depending on what Oakland does with its first-round pick, he might also have somebody like Amari Cooper, Kevin White or DeVante Parker to improve the passing game even further.
Although the Raiders offense is a work in progress, the pieces should be there for Musgrave to spur improvement in 2015.
