Report: Divas Champion Nikki Bella Suffers Leg Injury

Sharon GlencrossJan 19, 2015

It looks like some bad news for current Divas champion Nikki Bella.

As Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com notes, the Total Divas star was unable to wrestle at Sunday night's house show in San Antonio, with her sister, Brie, taking her place instead for a scheduled bout with Natalya.

"WWE Divas champion Nikki Bella was held out of last night's house show due to a hamstring injury," Johnson wrote. "She appeared at ringside with Brie Bella wrestling in her place."

One fan at the live event helpfully posted a picture of the in-ring action, showing the champion with her left leg wrapped up in bandages.

Hopefully, Nikki will rebound from her hamstring problems soon enough. If not, it will be yet another blow to WWE's already struggling Divas Division.

The company's main female star, AJ Lee, is out with a neck injury, which she recently confirmed on her official Twitter account.

And even when she does return, the thorny political situation between WWE and her outspoken and controversial husband, CM Punk, may very well put her long-term future with the company in some real jeopardy.

While girls like Naomi, Cameron, Rosa Mendes and Emma may make up the numbers, none of them have enough star power to carry the title. Lana is a terrific talker, but she's not much of a wrestler. Natalya is as solid a performer as ever, of course, but WWE has always been reluctant to give her a proper and prolonged feud. Paige, too, appears to have fallen from relevance in recent times.

While she may be a patchy in-ring performer, Nikki is a good heel and a strong personality. Crazy as this may have sounded a couple of years ago, she's probably the best thing the women's division has going for it right now. WWE can't afford to lose her right now.
