Matchups to Watch

No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. Aljaz Bedene

One of the greatest tennis players of the last five years is Novak Djokovic, and he looks to be ready for another elite season. Despite losing in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open, Djokovic looks poised for a deep run in the Australian Open.

As a four-time Australian Open champion, Djokovic enters Melbourne as a tournament favorite.

While the first-round matchup against Djokovic will be a huge moment for 25-year-old Aljaz Bedene, this game is perfect for the No. 1 seed to find his rhythm and work out any bugs he finds in his game.

When asked about the illness that affected him coming into the Australian Open, Djokovic told The Associated Press (via ESPN.com): “I had a tough couple of days. But it's all behind me now. I'm ready for the Open. [It was] a little bit of flu and stomach, but now it's good, it's passed.”

An early exit from the previous tournament and an illness may have tennis fans concerned for how well Djokovic will perform, but a favorable first-round battle should be enough to prepare him for the long road to another championship.

No. 1 Serena Williams vs. Alison Van Uytvanck

There is no questioning who the best women’s tennis player in the world is right now, and Serena Williams is looking to win an Australian Open title for the first time since 2010. She may have five career Grand Slam wins in Melbourne, but she was eliminated in the fourth round in two of the last three years.

Williams closed the 2014 season with a huge U.S. Open victory and is looking to carry that momentum to 2015 and the Australian Open. Standing in her way will be 20-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck.

Kevin Fischer of WTATennis.com shared some key details about Van Uytvanck:

After a tough end to the season for Van Uytvanck, the 2015 campaign won’t start off any better squaring off against Williams. With the American looking to return to prominence at the first Grand Slam event of the year, her Belgian opponent is in deep trouble.

If Williams wants to win the 2015 Australian Open, she must put together a decisive win over Van Uytvanck
