PBA Cup Finals 2015: San Miguel Beermen vs. Alaska Aces Preview for Game 6

Tom SunderlandJan 16, 2015

The San Miguel Beermen can complete a triumphant comeback and claim this year's PBA Cup with a third successive win over the Alaska Aces on Sunday.

Leo Austria's men once looked at risk of falling behind in the 2015 series early on but a continuation of their recent form would be enough to seal a comeback victory.

Game 6 promises to be a tetchy and tense encounter, with the Aces under pressure to pull the series back on level terms in time for Game 7, while the Beermen shoulder a responsibility to see their triumph through.

Beermen Claim Upper Hand

After falling 2-1 behind in this year's series, questions began to surface regarding whether or not the Beermen were ready to take the 2015 title, doubts which are long gone now.

Defeat to Alex Compton's Aces in Game 4 would have seen the Beermen suffer a blow almost too difficult to come back from, but Austria's contenders instead responded with their best performance of the competition thus far.

What we saw from the Beermen was a rounded assault from start to finish and it was their defence which ultimately allowed them to build a 88-70 scoreline, the largest margin of victory in any series fixture this year.

What was so encouraging from the Beermen was their willingness to learn from past mistakes which, as Jane Bracher of Rappler.com pointed out, was on full display in such a dominant mauling:

June Mar Fajardo has reigned as Austria's leader for months now and was recently dubbed Best Player of the Conference.

As PBAonTV5 illustrated, the Philippine hotshot was once again a prominent member of the team that won 93-88 in Game 5, notching a particularly impressive 13 rebounds:

This is an unfamiliar position for the Beermen, though. Following their most recent win, they now lead 3-2 and take the upper hand into a series matchup for the first time this year and it will be of some intrigue to see how their players handle the pressure.

Austria is thankful for the share of fortune his side has seen, though, admitting as much in his post-match press conference following Game 5:

Fajardo and Arwind Santos will be among those particularly poignant members of the Beermen roster hoping to cap off their good stretch of form, while the Aces will be leaning on Calvin Abueva, Sonny Thoss and other stars to bounce back.

A back-and-forth tournament will either have its victor decided on Sunday, or we'll see the two teams enter Game 7 under the tightest of circumstances.
