SMU Receives Notice of Allegations That Includes Keith Frazier
Friday, Jan. 16
According to Jeff Goodman and Andy Katz of ESPN.com, SMU is reviewing the allegations and will have a meeting with the NCAA at a later date:
"SMU has received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA that includes accusations of academic improprieties within Larry Brown's men's basketball program, multiple sources told ESPN.
Sources told ESPN that SMU has received the Notice of Allegations and is expected to meet with the NCAA's Committee of Infractions later this year.
"
The report also notes a specific allegation against Keith Frazier, whose academic "issues began when he was attempting to become eligible prior to his arrival at SMU."
Goodman reported earlier that Frazier had been deemed academically ineligible and was being forced to sit out the rest of this season, and another player left the program earlier this year possibly for academic reasons:
"The school has already come up short on one appeal to save Frazier's season, a source told ESPN. It has filed one more, but it is not optimistic about Frazier being able to play the remainder of the year. ...
In addition, reserve Justin Martin left the team recently for what the school said was to go professional. Sources, however, told ESPN that Martin's departure was also related to academics.
"
SMU basketball head coach Larry Brown told Goodman that Frazier's academic concerns involve "a GPA issue. That's the thing. It's his grade-point average. We have an appeal. That's it."
It's unclear how much this will affect SMU on the court though Frazier is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. The Mustangs are currently 13-4, having won 11 of their last 12 games, with a 4-1 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
