Next Step for Anderson Silva Should Be Georges St-Pierre
In the time it took Anderson Silva to make Forrest Griffins jaw literally detach from his skull, with the floor of the octagon still warm, sports hacks from around the world are already making up wild, speculative ideas for who "The Spider" should fight next.
Anderson Silva has more than proved himself, to be; arguably the best Martial arts practitioner in the world. His prowess in the noble art is unmatched. His precision, economy of punches, gives him nigh on a 100 percentage accuracy rate—which in MMA is a rare commodity, this level of accuracy can only be duplicated by one or two other strikers.
Most notably, but not exclusively, fighters such as Nick Diaz, George St-Pierre, Cung Le and Lyoto Machida, are names that would spring to the minds of most MMA fans in regards to punching accuracy.
"The Spider" has been in the UFC for just over three years, after only one fight in the octagon, Anderson Silva stripped the seemingly unbeatable Rich Franklin of his belt, in little under 3 minutes of the first round.
This quick rise to the top of the UFC's hierarchy, made many question the efficacy of Anderson's skills and ability. When you look at Silvas's UFC fight record today, many of his opponents were low to mid-level UFC fighters, His fight to Patrick Cote should have been deemed a "no contest", but Silvas two-time destruction of Rich Franklin, complete annihilation of Forest Griffin and his Obliteration of former Olympic wrestler and possible next contender; Dan Henderson, more than proves his credentials to cement his 11 straight victories in the Octagon.
With all those wins, who is possibly left for Silva to fight? Currently there is one other fighter facing the same dilemma.
Well many of these crazy sports hacks I mentioned earlier, are suggesting current UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida. This concept is absolutely crazy.
The light heavyweight division, has had 4 title holders in the past two years. There is an abundant supply of top name, light heavyweight fighters ready to have a try with the new untested champion, Who really needs to defend his title at least once, before being proclaimed "unbeatable".
Prior to Machida's title win against Rashad Evans, Machida was widely seen as the UFC's "best boring fighter", Silva himself has been accused of a number of lacklustre performances. Up until this point, both fighters have shown little enthusiasm to fight eachother, would this bode well for an exciting matchup?
A satisfying fight for Silva, would be to avenge the last loss on his fight record, against Yushin Okami, but after Okami's loss at the hands of Rich Franklin, would this fight now be a little presumptuous?
The only logical route for Anderson Silva, is to face another Champion that has beaten all the top fighters in his division, and currently has no-one left to fight. As I'm sure you've already guessed, I'm talking of the current welterweight champion George St Pierre, who whilst giving up nearly four inches in height, 25lbs or so in weight, has the Strength and ability to move up a weight class, to face the talented middleweight champ.
With the current dearth of top flight competitors in their respective divisions, this match-up would give the middleweight and welterweight divisions, a little time to consolidate and revitalise, letting both champions next true opponnent rise to the top.
