Best Possible Scenarios for Sting's Return to WWE Programming

Donald WoodJan 15, 2015

When wrestling legend Sting made his first-ever appearance in WWE at the 2014 edition of Survivor Series, fans from all generations were treated to one of the biggest moments in the history of the sport.

Now that Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and The Authority are back in power, though, it’s almost time for The Icon to make his return to WWE programming.

Sting’s debut took place during the main event of Survivor Series, and he was heavily responsible in removing The Authority from power. John Cena made the moment slightly less impactful just a few weeks later when he brought back The Authority in lackluster fashion.

With the WWE Universe as against The Authority as it has ever been, the 2015 Royal Rumble will be Sting’s chance to return and set the stage for a match at WrestleMania 31 against Triple H.

The first possible scenario will be a reactionary appearance to retaliate against Triple H for something he does surrounding the Royal Rumble match itself. There is no doubt The Authority will have a vested interest in the eventual winner of the Battle Royal, and it’s conceivable that the heel stable will do what it can to manipulate the outcome.

In the midst of trying to get top face contenders like Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns eliminated, Sting could enter the arena through the crowd—or from the rafters—and take out The Authority, leaving Triple H and Sting in a one-on-one faceoff. This visual could be used as part of the build to the eventual WrestleMania match between the two men as well.

Another possibility would be Sting making an appearance as the leader of the three Superstars fired by The Authority: Dolph Ziggler, Ryback and Erick Rowan. With WWE looking for a way to eventually bring them back, having them join forces with the man who helped their team win at Survivor Series would be a natural fit.

While this likely would mean none of the fired stars would be in the Royal Rumble match itself, the impact of the three men joining forces with Sting to attack Triple H, Kane, Seth Rollins, Big Show and the rest of The Authority could leave a longer-lasting impression.

This course of action wouldn’t get their jobs back, but the intrigue that would surround the group as they made surprise appearances with Sting on the road to WrestleMania would make this one of the top storylines heading into the company’s biggest PPV.

One possibility not being talked about enough is Sting returning to thwart a Rollins Money in the Bank cash-in attempt after the Triple Threat match. With WWE pushing that Rollins has basically two chances to win the championship, the company is trying to make it feel like a foregone conclusion he walks out of Royal Rumble with the belt.

This scenario likely wouldn’t come to fruition if Lesnar retains the championship in the match, but if Cena somehow sneaks out a victory and Rollins attempts to cash in with the help of The Authority, Sting’s return would impact the landscape of the company heading into WrestleMania.

As much as the majority of the WWE Universe would rather see The Undertaker square off against Sting in an epic confrontation, the teased matchup between Triple H and The Icon would be a monumental match as well.

Sting’s return should be to thwart Triple H and The Authority once again, and given the possible scenarios in which he could appear once again, wrestling fans should be on the edge of their seat waiting in anticipation.
