Royal Rumble 2015: Best Potential Finishes for Triple Threat WWE Title Match

Sharon GlencrossJan 13, 2015

The result of the Triple Threat main event match at Royal Rumble will have a huge impact on WrestleMania 31 in March.

Notably, Seth Rollins was added to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match on last Monday’s Raw, leaving open numerous new and interesting possibilities for the bout’s ending. It's far more interesting than the deathly dull prospect of another Brock Lesnar-John Cena singles bout.

With this in mind, let’s have a look at some potential conclusions to the Triple Threat match.

Paul Heyman Turns on Lesnar

Let’s face it: Paul Heyman cannot be trusted. At all. He’s one of the most duplicitous men in wrestling history. And while he may ostensibly be loyal to Lesnar right now, it’s surely only a matter of time before he turns on his friend—very possibly to align with Rollins.

WWE has strongly hinted at a Heyman-Rollins alliance over the past few months, and the two would make a great deal of sense as a storyline pairing. Both are slimy, manipulative characters fans love to hate.

They’re perfect for each other.

A scenario in which Lesnar wins the match and retains his title, only for Heyman to turn on him and help Rollins cash in is intriguing. It would also set up Lesnar as a babyface for the first time since he returned to the company in 2012. This is another idea with considerable appeal. WWE should give the former MMA fighter a shot as a good guy for a few months. If nothing else, it would be something new.

One of Cena's Friends Turns on Him

In an act that was despicable even by their standards, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon gleefully fired Ryback, Erick Rowan and Dolph Ziggler on last Monday’s Raw while a helpless Cena looked on.

One of these guys—likely Ziggler, judging by how embittered he sounded in a post-show interview when he was asked to comment on his dismissal—turning heel and running in during the main event to cost Cena the belt would be a logical storyline development.

Not only would this help give a boost to Ziggler, Rowan or Ryback and get some new blood in the main event, but it would also serve to set up Cena’s WrestleMania 31 program. Cena vs. Ziggler or Cena vs. Ryback could be worth watching, providing, of course, WWE allows Cena to lose.

Lesnar Retains Clean and Goes into WrestleMania 31

Another idea is to forget all the swerves and run-ins and script Lesnar to retain. This makes a lot of sense, as WWE has clearly been building up Lesnar and his title reign for something major. Scripting him to job at the Royal Rumble, therefore keeping him out of the title scene at WrestleMania 31, seems rather weird.

This would also serve to set up Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns or even Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan—two bouts that sound like they have a ton of potential to make Bryan or Reigns established main eventers.
