Jason Garrett, Cowboys Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Jason Garrett held up his end of the bargain in a critical 2014 season, guiding the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-4 regular-season record and an NFC East title. 

The Cowboys announced they have agreed to a five-year contract with Jason Garrett:

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com initially reported that America's Team rewarded Garrett with an extension on Tuesday.

Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com provided financial details leading up to the contract: "According to multiple reports both inside and outside of Valley Ranch, Garrett is very close to signing a five-year, $30 million contract to remain the head coach of America’s Team. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday evening."

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones stood firmly by Garrett after the coach went 24-24 with zero playoff appearances in his first three full years at the helm. That steadfast faith paid off in 2014.

Dallas leaned more on the running game and got enough improvement from its defense to be a top-three team in the NFC. Provided the Cowboys continue on that trajectory, Garrett shouldn't have to worry about his job security for years to come.

Garrett's previous deal had expired, and Jones wasn't about to let him go. Speaking after the team's 26-21 Divisional Round playoff loss to Green Bay about the importance of retaining Garrett, Jones was adamant about bringing him back.

"I know it's certainly one of the orders of the day, beginning right this minute," said Jones of Garrett's new contract, via DallasCowboys.com's David Helman. "We're through playing. That's usually when that steps up and gets at the top of your list."

Retaining Garrett is a big first step in a critical Cowboys offseason. They have to make sure to sustain their momentum into 2015, which means holding on to key players and assistants.

NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray is a free agent. Offensive coordinator Bill Callahan and passing game coordinator Scott Linehan will garner outside interest, as will defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. There's a lot of danger for potential turnover.

Continuity will be key for Dallas amid an era of parity around the league. Garrett's newly signed deal cements that concept in at least one marquee area of the organization.
