Virginia Tech Football: Hokies' 2015 National Signing Day Wish List

Bryan ManningJan 25, 2015

National signing day is just over a week away, and the Virginia Tech Hokies have most of their class locked up. Last season, Tech had some drama with the announcements of both Derrick Nnadi and Javon Harrison coming on signing day, and the news wasn't good for the Hokies.

Most of the drama around Tech's class of 2015 concluded in December when Josh Sweat, a highly regarded defensive end from the state of Virginia, chose Florida State over the Hokies.

Since that time, Tech has picked up some impressive commitments, including 4-star quarterback Dwayne Lawson from Tampa, Florida, and defensive tackle Tim Settle of Manassas, Virginia.

Virginia Tech currently has 23 commitments in the class of 2015, seven of which enrolled in classes earlier this month. The Hokies have the room to add maybe one or two more on signing day.

Can Tech perhaps steal a recruit away from one of its rivals? Here's Virginia Tech's 2015 wish list for national signing day.

Victor Alexander

Victor Alexander, a 5'10", 221-pound linebacker from Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, Florida, is currently a UCLA commit.

However, the Hokies are still in the mix, per Evan Watkins of 247Sports. Watkins believes Alexander's true destination will not be known until signing day. Alexander has been to Blacksburg, and his former high school teammate, Isaiah Ford, is pulling hard for Alexander to join him at Virginia Tech.

Alexander's size is his biggest obstacle, as more premier teams would have looked at him if he were a bit taller. His film jumps out at you. He's a fast, aggressive linebacker who attacks the line of scrimmage. He's an ideal fit for Bud Foster's defense at middle linebacker.

Alexander would be a nice addition to Tech's class of 2015.

Shelton Johnson

Shelton Johnson, a 6'5", 220-pound defensive end from Atlantic High in Delray Beach, Florida, is a high priority for the Hokies over the next week. Unfortunately for head coach Frank Beamer and Tech fans, the Florida State Seminoles are also in hot pursuit of Johnson.

Sal Sunseri, FSU's defensive line coach and ace recruiter the last two years, recently left Tallahassee for a job with the NFL's Oakland Raiders. Can the Hokies take advantage of Sunseri's departure?

Getting Johnson would be a nice consolation prize for Tech after losing out on Sweat. The Hokies need more defensive end depth in this class. Johnson is tall and extremely athletic with the frame to add several more pounds of muscle.

Atlantic High School has been good to the Hokies in the past. Current standouts Luther Maddy and Dadi Nicolas attended school there, as did former All-American cornerback Brandon Flowers.

Acquiring Johnson's signature on signing day would be the cherry on top of what is a solid class.

Finish Strong

In past years, national signing day presented some tough times for Beamer and his staff. The Hokies lost out on some prime targets they were finalists for on signing day. It's left a bad taste in the mouths of Virginia Tech fans who believe this coaching staff can't finish strong.

It's time to change that.

After losing out on Sweat and fellow defensive end Jalen Dalton in the fall, Tech has rebounded nicely with the additions of Settle and Lawson. The Hokies must make sure they do what's necessary to keep this class intact and perhaps steal a recruit or two.

If Beamer could land Johnson or Alexander, it would be one of Virginia Tech's best recruiting classes in years. Remember, this will be a young team in 2015 with the potential to be very good. A strong class could help the Hokies take the next step.
