Michael Sam Engaged to Boyfriend Vito Cammisano

Free-agent defensive end Michael Sam and boyfriend Vito Cammisano are engaged.

Michael Sam confirmed the announcement via Twitter:

Emily Smith and Julie Gordon of the New York Post's Page Six first reported on Jan. 8 that the two took the step during a vacation through Europe. According to CBSSports.com's John Breech, a friend of Cammisano claimed on Instagram he and Sam were engaged.

Sam and Cammisano have shared some of the highlights on social media, which includes Sam receiving a cake for his 25th birthday.

Many fans became aware of Sam and Cammisano's relationship after the two shared an embrace and kissed after the St. Louis Rams selected Sam in the seventh round with the 249th pick of the 2014 draft. He thus became the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL.

The Rams cut Sam in August before the season began. The Dallas Cowboys added Sam to their practice squad at the beginning of September but waived him a little over a month later. He's yet to appear in a regular-season game.
