Avs' Varlamov Sets Record for Saves in a Road Shutout
Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov set an NHL record for most saves in a regular-season road shutout, with 54 stops in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, per Sportsnet Stats.
The Avs scored two goals in the opening 1 minute, 17 seconds, with the first coming courtesy of center Nathan MacKinnon at the 0:53 mark, followed by a tally from center Maxime Talbot just 24 seconds later.
The 19-year-old MacKinnon, who was named the game's second star, registered the first assist on Talbot's goal to capture his first multi-point performance since Nov. 22.

Handed an early two-goal lead, Varlamov turned in arguably the finest performance by any goaltender this season, holding a team stacked with offensive weapons at bay.
Superstar right wing Patrick Kane had a game-high seven shots on goal, followed by five apiece from defenseman Duncan Keith, center Jonathan Toews and left wing Patrick Sharp. The Blackhawks had another four players with four shots on goal apiece, meaning eight skaters combined for a whopping 38 shots.
Meanwhile, the Avs managed just 24 shots on goal, with no player registering more than three. After getting outshot by a modest margin of 17-11 in the first period, Colorado was outshot by a remarkable margin of 37-13 over the final two frames.
Varlamov was thus able to break the previous record of 53 saves in a regular-season road shutout, set by Craig Anderson of the Florida Panthers back in 2008.
