Trestman Targeted by Buccaneers, Jaguars

Tuesday, Jan. 6

Marc Trestman may have only lasted two seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, but his reputed schematic genius is making him a hot candidate for offensive coordinator positions.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have sought out Trestman to take over play-calling duties:

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly doing the same as of Tuesday, per ESPN Insider Adam Schefter:

ESPN's Josina Anderson has some insight into the potential transition to Tampa:

Before Schefter's report Tuesday, CBS Sports' Pete Prisco weighed in on the possibility of Trestman in Jacksonville:

It appears Trestman is destined to land somewhere in the Sunshine State to help either the Bucs or Jags on offense. Those two teams are picking in the top three of the 2015 NFL draft largely because of a failure to light up the scoreboard.

Jacksonville was dead last in points scored while Tampa Bay was 29th. Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles was the No. 3 overall selection in the previous draft and struggled as a rookie, so Trestman will have to play to Bortles' strengths if joining Jacksonville is going to work.

The more probable, plausible scenario has Trestman calling the shots for the Bucs, who employ former Bears quarterback Josh McCown and Trestman's Windy City predecessor, head coach Lovie Smith.

But Tampa Bay also holds the top pick in the draft, which could be used to choose Oregon quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota or Florida State star Jameis Winston.

Trestman is perhaps most lauded as a QB guru. Whether he works with Bortles in Jacksonville, reunites with and revives McCown or grooms a future franchise passer in Tampa Bay, it comes as little surprise that Trestman is in high demand.
