Mike Tannenbaum Hired by Dolphins in Front Office Role: Latest Details, Reaction

Timothy RappJan 6, 2015

Mike Tannenbaum spent last season as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins and, clearly, the team respected his input quite a bit. On Tuesday they reportedly made that admiration official, as he will serve as the team's executive vice president of football operations, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

The Dolphins confirmed the move via Twitter:

According to Mike Garafolo and Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, general manager Dennis Hickey will report to Tannenbaum in this new role. However, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Joe Philbin is a different story altogether:

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald provides more details:

However, Tannenbaum will have some business to oversee before fully committing to his new gig with the Dolphins, per the report:

"

Tannenbaum represents Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who has interviewed for multiple head-coaching jobs this offseason. He also represents Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, a candidate for the vacant Tampa Bay Buccaneers' coordinator position. Sources have said Tannenbaum is expected to continue representing those clients through the end of their candidacies before transitioning into a full-time role with the Dolphins.

"

Tannenbaum spent seven years as general manager of the New York Jets, so he certainly knows his way around a front office. His prior experience as an agent for professional coaches gives him a unique perspective on all angles of contract negotiations and other executive matters in a front office setting.

Ben Volin of The Boston Globe is a bit more perplexed by the hire, however:

Dawn Aponte is the Dolphins’ executive vice president of football administration and previously worked with Tannenbaum in New York.

The Dolphins will be hoping that working relationship leads to big things in the coming years for the team, which has made the playoffs just once in the past 13 years, back in 2008. Now, Tannenbaum's main priority will be ensuring that postseason droughts like the current one come to an end.
