Duron Carter Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation Surrounding WR

Duron Carter is one of the Canadian Football League's most talented players and just so happens to also be Hall of Famer Cris Carter's son. It's no surprise, then, that he is drawing a ton of interest from the NFL. After making several visits with NFL teams, Carter narrowed his list down to three and ultimately agreed to terms with the Colts on Monday.

Carter Reportedly Nearing Deal With Colts

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Duron Carter "is closing in on an agreement with the Indianapolis Colts."

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports adds that the two sides have an agreement in place, but a deal likely won't be made official until February. 

Stephen Holder of the Indy Star revealed earlier on Tuesday how Carter could sign with an NFL team prior to Feb. 10:

Carter – son of Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter – will be released from his CFL contract if he agrees to terms with an NFL team, according to an agreement between Carter and Alouettes general manager Jim Popp, a source said. That means the Colts – seen as the frontrunner to land Carter – could strike a deal and sign him without having to wait until Feb. 10, when the NFL allows CFL players with expired contracts to sign deals. Releasing him from his CFL deal would make Carter a free agent.

Holder of The Indianapolis Star reported on Indianapolis' chances of landing Duron Carter on Jan. 25, calling the Colts a front-runner to land him:

Canadian Football League standout Duron Carter can't sign with an NFL team until Feb. 10, but a source with knowledge of the situation said the Colts remain one of the frontrunners for the services of the former Ohio State and Alabama receiver.

The other team to watch: The Minnesota Vikings, the former team of Carter's father, Hall-of-Fame receiver Cris Carter.

The Colts hosted Carter for a visit earlier this month and continue to have dialogue with him, but it's still too early to predict where Carter will ultimately wind up.

Carter, according to the source, is drawn to Indianapolis for obvious reasons: The presence of three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Andrew Luck and one of the NFL's best passing offenses. Carter and his agent have expressed his legitimate interest in playing for the Colts to the team's front office.

But immediate playing time is also important to Carter, and there remains uncertainty about where he would initially fit in with the Colts. Financial details will also play a role in what Carter ultimately decides.

Carter Reportedly Done Visiting Teams

According to ESPN's Ben Goessling, coveted free agent Duron Carter has narrowed his list of teams to sign with after making multiple visits:

On Friday, Jan. 16, Pro Football Talk noted that Carter would try out for the Browns.

ESPN's David Newton revealed on Wednesday, Jan. 14, that the Panthers were in the mix for Carter, but Newton admitted that Minnesota was the favorite to land him.

It appears the Browns were the last team that Carter will work out for, and the next big decision will be a commitment to one of the teams interested in him.

Several Teams Interested in Carter

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora provided the long list of teams that are set to hold a tryout for 23-year-old free agent Duron Carter:

Carter, who spent just one season at Ohio State before transferring due to academic issues before bouncing around several smaller schools, went undrafted in 2013. But don't mistake those struggles in school with a lack of intelligence.

“The first thing people would say about him was that he [was] not smart enough, which is why he [couldn’t] stay in school," Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp told Yahoo Sports' Eric Edholm. "That’s the exact opposite of the truth. He’s a very intelligent guy, probably borderline genius IQ."

The talent is clearly there too. A 6'5", 205-pound threat with No. 1 wide receiver traits and an obviously enticing football pedigree, Carter compiled 124 receptions, 1,939 yards and 12 touchdowns during his two seasons with the Alouettes, per CFL.ca. 

While it's important not to overrate stats from the CFL, Carter comes in a package that will be alluring to NFL teams looking to add an explosive playmaker to their offense. 

With so many interested parties, though, it won't be easy to sign him.
