PJ Williams Declares for 2015 NFL Draft: Latest Details and Reaction

Tim KeeneyJan 6, 2015

P.J. Williams, a potential first-round selection, has made it official: He is declaring for the 2015 NFL draft.

The Florida State star cornerback announced the news on Tuesday via Twitter:

Williams, who won Defensive MVP for his performance in the BCS National Championship last year, tallied one interception, 10 pass deflections and 74 total tackles in 2014, per CFBStats.com.

But basic statistics hardly tell even a portion of the picture when evaluating cornerbacks. He is a first-round prospect particularly because of his size and speed.

An exciting athlete, Williams is 6'0" and 196 pounds with 4.4 wheels. He is also versatile, boasting the physicality and strength to play press coverage and the fluid footwork and ball-skills to make plays down the field.

Rotoworld's Cian Fahey recently drew comparisons to Arizona Cardinals star Patrick Peterson, and many pundits have him slated as a first-round selection.

However, his 2014 seasons wasn't without its inconsistency. He struggled against Louisville's DeVante Parker, who will be joining him on Sundays, and as Pro Football Focus' Steve Palazzolo illustrated, his impact in the running game was erratic:

This is a deep cornerback class, as Williams, Marcus Peters and Trae Waynes are all strong candidates to be the top CB selected.

Even with that kind of depth, though, there are enough teams with a need at the position that Williams will almost assuredly hear his name called sometime in the first round.

No matter when he's selected, though, the talented playmaker has the size, speed and versatility to make an immediate impact on Sundays.
