Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of January 5

Max MuntonJan 4, 2015

The January transfer window is usually slow in getting going, with clubs cautious about letting their best talent go halfway through a season, but time is of the essence for Liverpool.

After a poor start to the season at both ends of the pitch, surely purchasing a new goalkeeper and striker is essential to resurrecting the Reds' campaign.

While no deals have been done yet, transfer rumours are in full flow. Here we round up the latest speculation around Anfield.

We'll be keeping this tracker updated throughout the week, so check back daily for the latest rumours and developments.

Last updated: Monday, January 5

James Milner

1 of 5

Out of contract in the summer and not starting every game for Manchester City, 29-year-old James Milner has caught the eye of Liverpool, if Oliver Kay of The Times is to be believed.

Kay explains that contract negotiations have broken down between England international Milner and Man City, opening the door for clubs to offer him a deal for next season onwards.

Milner's experience both domestically and in Europe may well be an inticing ingredient Brendan Rodgers wishes to add to his youthful squad.

Suso

2 of 5

Once regarded as the hot young prospect around Melwood, Suso's days at Liverpool have looked limited for some time.

Now it looks like the 21-year-old's career, which never really got started with just 21 appearances for the Reds, will turn to Italy with Marca claiming (h/t This Is Anfield) that a pre-contract has been agreed.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t This Is Anfield) says Milan are keen to make the deal go through this month.

"Sky Sources" at the Sky Sports say Suso will move to the San Siro in July.

Steven Gerrard

3 of 5

With tributes pouring in from all quarters of the football community since he announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Steven Gerrard's future is still the subject of speculation.

The 34-year-old confirmed in an emotional interview on Saturday that he will be swapping Merseyside for America, per This Is Anfield (h/t LFC TV), but where is yet to be unconfirmed.

All signs point to LA Galaxy, with ESPN America claiming (h/t Daily Mirror) that he will sign an 18-month, £3.9 million pro rata deal.

If true, Gerrard will be following in the footsteps of another former England captain David Beckham, who played for Galaxy from 2007 to 2012.

Divock Origi

4 of 5

Reports on Sunday suggested that Liverpool are close to sealing a deal with Lille to bring Divock Origi to Merseyside sooner than expected, per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo.

The 19-year-old Belgium international was signed by the Reds last summer on the basis that he spend one more full season in Ligue 1.

With Daniel Sturridge injured for most of the campaign so far and Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert struggling to get their Liverpool careers off the ground, Raheem Sterling has been used, albeit effectively, as a makeshift striker.

Pearce expects Liverpool to stump up £3 million to Lille to bring Origi's arrival forward, but this could prove a shrewd move, with the likes of young West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino being touted for £23 million, per the Express & Star.

Xherdan Shaqiri

5 of 5

Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri is a player who was linked to Liverpool a lot in the summer, but with the Reds signing Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic, a move never materialised.

With only nine Bundesliga appearances to his name this season, Shaqiri's game time at the Allianz Arena continues to be limited, which has attracted the interest of Liverpool and Inter Milan, according to David Amoyal (h/t Matthew Amalfitano) on GianlucaDiMarzio.com.

Amoyal claims Liverpool are set to offer €14 million for the Switzerland international, while Inter are keen on an initial loan deal.
