Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Paul Pogba, Wesley Sneijder

Tom SunderlandJan 4, 2015

Manchester United made some big investments in midfield last summer, but Louis van Gaal isn't done reinventing his team's core, it seems, as speculation grows regarding interest in Paul Pogba and Wesley Sneijder.

Juventus are alleged to be planning for Pogba's departure in 2015, with the Daily Star's Jack Wilson reporting that Marco Verratti is a major target for the Serie A champions.

Ex-Old Trafford starlet Pogba has risen to become one of the most revered playmakers in the world since departing for Turin in 2012, with a price tag of £70 million allegedly attached to his signature at present.

Wilson quotes Verratti as speaking candidly on his chances of a return to Italy, where he once impressed as a talismanic presence for Pescara:

"

Back when I used to play for Pescara I was sought after by a lot of clubs but if I'd ended up in Juventus I doubt they would have given me the same space that I have with PSG. I am in a great club and I think I made the right choice, because in Italy there is less faith in youth.

I, on the other hand, believe that if a player is good, then he should play regardless. PSG can still win everything. We are third in the league, but we'll climb back up. In the Champions League we'll try going as far as we can.

"

Van Gaal added Daley Blind and Ander Herrera to his ranks last summer, but Pogba is regarded as a far more rounded asset, capable in the box-to-box role after which United are yearning.

Tancredi Palmeri of beIN Sports insists that either he or Juve partner Arturo Vidal will not be at the Old Lady next season:

Last summer's transfer spending of more than £150 million showed that the Red Devils are certainly willing to spend in order to return to Europe's upper echelon, but Pogba's price still appears steep, even considering his quality.

The club will be especially regretful to fork out so much for a player they once called their own, but next summer could bring about yet more mass splurging at the Theatre of Dreams.

A more affordable asset in 2015 would be that of Sneijder, a target long linked with a potential move to United who has so far remained with Galatasaray.

And Sneijder could hold a hand in Pogba's future, too, after Italian newspaper Tuttosport (h/t Anthony Chapman of the Express) revealed Juve are in for the Dutchman's services.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe recently explored Sneijder's real market worth and the playmaker's chances of completing a January move away from Turkey:

The Bianconeri are keen to sign Sneijder this January and are reported by Chapman to have already lodged a £1.5 million bid, far off the kind of numbers associated with Pogba's prospect.

David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com says the 31-year-old, though older in years, would offer Juve an option they don't currently possess, likening his arrival to that of Carlos Tevez:

The veteran has previously worked under Van Gaal with the Netherlands national team, but one might debate whether or not there's actually room for one of his skill set at United.

The likes of Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria and Wayne Rooney are already competing for a similar No. 10 placement under their manager, with Sneijder's high wages also a factor worth taking into account.

Massimiliano Allegri would undoubtedly be overjoyed if, as Amoyal attests, Sneijder could have a similar impact in Turin to that of Tevez, who has been a marvel since moving to Italy's top flight.

Manchester United fans would assuredly prefer to see a player like Pogba arrive on their borders this year, but the finances involved in his transfer seem steep, even for a club with the Red Devils' sway.
