Saturday Recap

3 of 3

Defending world champion Michael van Gerwen's reign is over after he was dumped out of the competition by a brilliant display from Gary Anderson.

Anderson rampaged to a 6-3 victory after his Dutch opponent had threatened a comeback when rallying from 2-0 down to level at 3-3.

The 44-year-old Scot—who is a previous runner-up in the competition—flew out of the blocks to stun the champion, but Van Gerwen soon started to find his form. It was at 3-1 that MvG began to rally, hitting three 12-dart finishes to bring the game back to 3-3.

Anderson needed a response and it was over the next two sets that the match turned. Van Gerwen missed four darts to take a 4-3 lead and then had a dart at double-eight to level at 4-4. When his radar erred, Anderson counter-punched and never looked back.

The match finished 6-3 in Anderson's favour, and he will now face Phil Taylor in Sunday's final.

Anderson ended proceedings with a 50 percent check-out success and a strong three-dart average of 102.2, per Elizabeth Hudson of BBC Sport.

Taylor defeated longtime rival Raymond van Barneveld in the other semi, averaging 102.39 in a 6-2 victory, per Sky Sports

It was The Power who started the stronger of the two, throwing impressive darts—including his first 100+ checkout of the tournament—to take a 2-0 lead.

Van Barneveld came alive in the third, denying his rival a single leg, and the turnaround was truly on when Barney continued to find high scores to level at 2-2.

The pivotal set was the fifth, in which every leg went against the darts. Taylor took it, and then upped his level in impressive style to push his lead out to 4-2 with no response from Van Barneveld.

And it was then that Taylor raced to the line, hitting a 124 checkout en route, to end the match 6-2 and take his place in his 20th World Title final.
