General manager Howie Roseman had the following to say about the move, per Martin Frank of The News Journal (Del.):

Gamble is well-regarded in NFL circles and was apparently close to Eagles coach Chip Kelly, per Albert Breer of NFL.com:

According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports, however, there were indications that a change was coming somewhere in the front office this season:

Gamble returned to the Eagles during the 2013 offseason after beginning his NFL career in Philadelphia.

Rumors persist that Kelly and Roseman may not be seeing eye to eye in football matters, per Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, and now Kelly has lost a major ally. It will be interesting to see if there is any fallout from this move. The Eagles won 10 games this season but failed to reach the postseason after winning the NFC East last year.

McLane feels this was a power play that Roseman came out on top of:

Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com provided additional details on the circumstances of the move:

"

According to a source with knowledge of the Eagles' inner workings, there is a divide among the team's football people. Some are loyal to Kelly and others side with Roseman. The source said Gamble's ouster was a sign that Eagles owner Jeff Lurie was siding with Roseman.

"

It's likely Gamble will quickly earn a job, however, and might even be in line for a general manager position given his background helping to build championship-caliber rosters and his sterling reputation in NFL circles.
