Shanahan is only 35, but he's already endured a coaching career with several twists and turns. He became the youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL when he was promoted by the Houston Texans in 2008, joined his father with the Washington Redskins in 2010, was fired in 2013 and spent last season with the Cleveland Browns.

His most memorable coaching display came with Washington in 2012, when he turned then-rookie Robert Griffin III into one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL and put together an efficient offensive machine that finished second in the NFL in yards per play (6.2) and fourth in points per game (27.3).

According to Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, his work that season was a large reason why he received interest as a head coach:

Most recently, Shanahan couldn't quite put together the same results, as the Browns finished 27th in yards per play (5.1), 27th in points per game (18.7) and 24th in Football Outsiders' offensive rankings.

Still, Cleveland was mostly a mess, with Brian Hoyer falling apart as the season wore on, rookie Johnny Manziel making more headlines off the field than on it and Josh Gordon missing most of the season due to suspension.

Despite that, Shanahan showed an ability to establish the running game and create a scheme that worked when his players made the plays.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Shanahan has a bright football mind and will certainly bring some youthful energy to the offensive coordinator position.

If he can recover some of that magic from 2012, though, this may soon look like a savvy move for the Falcons.
