Fantasy Baseball Free Agent Pool – Strikeout Kings

Some reasonably available players to assist you in the strikeouts category.  Realize that some of these will come with high ERAs & WHIPs because if a pitcher has low numbers in those categories and a good strikeout total, they’re already spoken for.

Gio González, Oakland A’s—Gio had 15 Ks in 12 innings (11.25 K/9) last week while going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.  On the year he’s 3-2 with 50 Ks (45-2/3 IP) with a 6.31 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, and .299 BAA.  He’s owned in 5 percent of Yahoo!, 0.3 percent of ESPN, and 14 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Rick VandenHurk, Florida Marlins—VandenHurk had 13 Ks in 10 innings (11.7 K/9) last week with a 6.30 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  On the year he’s 1-1 with 20 Ks (21 IP) with a 4.29 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and a .259 BAA.  He’s owned in 18 percent of Yahoo!, 2 percent of ESPN, and 16 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Luke Hochevar, Kansas City Royals—Hochevar had had 12 Ks in 11 innings (9.8 K/9) last week with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP.  On the year he’s 6-4 with 60 Ks (81-2/3 IP) with a 5.40 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and a .266 BAA.  He’s owned in 33 percent of Yahoo!, 3.3 percent of ESPN, and 43 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Matt Thornton, Chicago White Sox—Matt Thornton had 8 Ks in 4 2/3 innings last week (15.4 K/9) while picking up a pair of wins with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP.  On the year he’s 6-2 with 57 Ks (46 IP), 16 holds, one save, a 2.74 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and .220 BAA.  He’s owned in 38 percent of Yahoo!, 3.1 percent of ESPN, and 9 percent of CBS Sportsline leagues.
