Pittsburgh Steelers Throw Interception on Dumbest Fake Punt of the NFL Season

Dan CarsonDec 29, 2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers outlasted Jeremy Hill and the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday despite what could stand to be one of the most bafflingly terrible play calls of the 2014-15 NFL season.

Hanging on to a three-point lead with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley decided to Haley things up with a fake punt on a 4th-and-9 situation near midfield.

The decision ended in a turnover for Pittsburgh, with Australian punter Brad Wing chucking up a 500-style "mystery box" ball to the Bengals' special teams unit.

A trusty barometer for judging the timing of your trick play is the sportscasters' intonation on the call. If their inflection doesn't change in the slightest as your sneakiness unfurls, you probably messed up.

No one really knew what to make of the Steelers' decision to run a trick play on 4th-and-long with a three-point lead and the division title on the line.

On the bright side, at least no one "died" in the making of this play.

Fortunately for the Steelers, Haley's Russian roulette routine failed to derail Pittsburgh from victory thanks to an A.J. Green fumble on the ensuing drive.

The turnover allowed Ben Roethlisberger to ice the game with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown, improving Pittsburgh to 11-5 on the season and clinching the AFC North.

Get excited for the postseason, Steelers fans. With Haley calling the shots, every down is a choose-your-own adventure.
