The PAC-10 Asks For The Impossible: Honesty

Doug UrschelAug 5, 2009

This article is a gut check for the people in the Harris Poll, the voting coaches of the Coach's Poll and the faceless computers. The aforementioned three entities make the decision of which two teams play for the BCS Championship.

The above photograph is demonstrative of the dishonesty of the above BCS triad.  The photo has two USC players having just sacked the Oklahoma University Heisman winning QB.

USC player #58 is currently the MLB of the Seattle Seahawks.  Although a junior in this photo, he chose to go to the NFL the next year and immediately became the defensive signal caller for the Seahawks.

USC player #55 is currently the starting OLB for the Cincinnati Bengals.

The OU #18 has a Heisman Trophy on a mantle in his home.  However, he has never been drafted into the NFL.  He has never found a NFL team who would give him a second thought of being on a scout team.

This took place in the BCS Championship game in the Orange Bowl.  USC won this game 55-19.  This game was not as close as the score would indicate.  USC began to freely substitute at the start of the fourth quarter.

If there had been any honesty within the selection process of the BCS,  Oklahoma University would not have been in that game.  They clearly had no right to be on the same field as USC.

Auburn had just finished an undefeated season, but OU was selected to go to the game.  What happened.  Auburn still wants to know.

The answer to the above question is simple.  Common sense screams the answer  today.  In fact, this season begins like all the other BCS seasons, with dishonesty.

How many times must a Bob Stoops' Oklahoma team participate in major bowl games before someone stops the charade.  Big Game Bob Stoops is not what he is advertised to be.

Stoops cannot win the big games.  Nope, he has pedestrian teams at best.  He even lost to Boise State in a non BCS bowl game.

None of the above has even the slightest affect on the BCS triad.  Hey fellas, Oklahoma can't win the big ones!  How about doing your job?

The BCS has claimed that their system is geared to present the two best teams in the Championship bowl game.  Yea!  Hey guys, check out how many times you've been successful.

Last year, the final Coach's Poll had USC at number two and the AP had Utah at number two.  The year before USC was ranked number 2 in the AP and number 3 in the Coache's Poll.  Georgia was number two in the Coache's Poll.

Simple facts show that no one thought Oklahoma should have been in the NC game last year, likewise was the feeling that Ohio State shouldn't have played for the NC the year before.

I will be more direct.  The BCS triad inflates their favorites and deflates their strongest opponents.  Still confused?  There were computers which rated USC at number one at the same time others had them at #14.

The Coache's Poll kept USC out of the top four after their six point loss.  Likewise, the coaches made sure that Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas were in the top four.

It didn't matter what lousy team the above four played, they never dropped.  USC continued to win and didn't gain.  In fact, after a 65-0 win, USC was dropped a spot.

The Harris Poll must be the most dishonest group of characters outside of the Mafia.  Is there a human being who doesn't believe that there isn't a Harris Poll voter who would vote for all of the teams of the SEC before they would even consider USC?

Here is something for all of the voters and all of the fans of college sports to understand.  The PAC-10 is known as THE CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS.

The PAC-10 has won more National Championships in both men and women sports than any conference in the nation.  The three top schools in the nation in men and women National Championships are Stanford, UCLA and USC.

The other day I read an article about what the PAC-10 needs to do to get some respect.  Respect?  The PAC-10 is looking at the rest of the nation and wondering when they are going to open their eyes.

Hey USA, USC is wondering how each of the other 119 teams don't have 11 National Championships in football and baseball.  The Trojans don't know why no other team can combine that with seven Heisman winners.

Why can't some other football team have three Heisman winners in four years.  Why not?  Why haven't all football teams had 52 players get drafted in the NFL in the last seven years?

The PAC-10 wants to know why isn't there another conference in the nation that can even approach the PAC-10 in Championships?

It's obvious that the PAC-10 is the conference that walks the walk.  They don't need the "respect" of those who just talk the talk.

The PAC-10 doesn't need advice on how to be respectable from the weak 110.  However, the PAC-10 might think about giving classes on how to participate in sports to the rest of the country

It's becoming obvious that the people on the west coast are looking at the BCS process as a closed institution, if not just a broken one.  The votes of the triad of thugs are in the east.

This entire BCS process was exposed by the president of the SEC when he made a very unwise statement.  He stated that he believed there should be a rule that one of the two teams in the NC game should always come from the SEC.

The above might have been taken as a statement from just another SEC fan, but at the time, he was the president of the BCS.

The playoff system will never happen.  The school presidents don't want it.  The communities don't want it.  The BCS doesn't want it.

The BCS triad demands that their iron fist controls who gets to play in the BCS NC game.  A playoff would take control away from the BCS.

It's just a matter of following the money.  The most college football money is with ESPN.  ESPN spends most of their money in the SEC.

I contend that ESPN considers the BIG-12 teams to be lap dogs of the SEC.  They believe that the BIG-12 will give them their best chance of a win for their SEC.

Please, check the books if you can't believe that ESPN controls that much of college football.

If honesty is going to return to college football, the BCS must be torn down.  Take away the ESPN money.  Take away the phony voting by the Harris Poll.  Take away the phony voting by the coaches.  Take away the faceless, inaccurate and absurd computers.

The AP and Coaches Polls should be the only votes used to determine the NC.

The AP voters certainly have more expertise than the Harris and computer people.  The coaches would have less to gain to make wild votes, therefore making their votes more credible.

Certainly, there would be more opportunities for a split Title.  So?  That only means more excitement for more bowl games.

Get rid of the phonies in the Harris, computers and the presently constructed Coaches Polls.

Pete Carroll has never participated in the Coaches Poll.  Maybe he was too honest of a man to vote in a system like that.

Those who can are in the PAC-10.  Those who can't are everywhere else.
