Tampa Bay Buccaneer Receiving Corps Takes Another Hit

Tom EdringtonAug 5, 2009

It was the last play of the Wednesday morning practice and everything had been pretty routine up to that point except for the thunder and lightning.

Then the Bucs got another jolt.

Receiver Michael Clayton caught a pass in the end zone, popped up and suddenly grimaced and grabbed his left hamstring.

He limped significantly and was helped to the locker room by a member of the athletic training staff.

With Antonio Bryant nursing a swollen knee and Kellen Winslow working out an ankle problem, it is not something the Bucs wanted to see.

Wednesday's morning session started on time at 10:15 a.m. with skies to the west threatening. The threat became real with thunder, rain and lighting forcing the team off the field at 10:50. The front moved east and the team was back on the field by 11:30.

Raheem Morris made sure his team got in a significant amount of work despite the delay.

Luke McCown continues to run the first team offense and Byron Leftwich the second team.

The team went live with some goal-line offense with Earnest Graham and Derrick Ward testing the defense.

On the first live play with rain still falling, McCown fumbled the initial snap.

Graham and the first team offense did not do well against the first team defense.

The second team offense scored twice on the second team defense.

By 11:40, Raheem was displeased and ordered a sideline-to-sideline gasser run. It is becoming his trademark. He wants his team accountable when his standards are not met.

One player who stood out the wrong way this session was receiver Dexter Jackson. He dropped more passes than he caught, promptly one person in the stands to declare: "Jackson couldn't catch swine flu in China!"

Hit of the day was taken by defensive end Stylez White. He was caught on the blind side on a reverse to Jackson and was blown-up. He shook off the hit and went back to the action.

Along with Bryant and Winslow, defensive back Kyle Arrington didn't dress in pads, neither did receiver Joel Filani (hamstring). Kicker Matt Bryant didn't do any work and may be a bit behind Mike Nugent in the battle for the placekicking job.

Winslow did run in a lot of the drills and it was hoped he'd return for the afternoon practice.
