Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez: Inexpensive Selection

Fantasy KnuckleheadsAug 2, 2009

Every year top fantasy football’s experts research which players will be valued low during draft day, but will produce top fantasy player points due to circumstances that usually are noticed and begin the previous year.  Most of these players played in the NFL in previous seasons and go un-noticed because there is a household name standing in their way of being noticed by majority of all fantasy team owners.  The purposes is because there just simply isn’t enough chances to be a target when you are the 3rd guy that your super-star QB options to.  There are some specific plays that are usually designed for the 3rd and 4th string guys, but the bottom line is, you have

2 guys in front of you that make up the show and they get the looks before you do and in the NFL, most defenses will not give your QB time to find you.  It’s usually, “look at #1 – not open or look #2 – not open, scramble and dump off or force it to #1 or one of your running backs.  That would be the case with Anthony Gonzalez.  This year he is slotted opposite of Reggie Wayne in Marvin Harrison’s old slot.  Uhh, is it really necessary to write any further?  Let’s look at some facts, a.k.a stats.

In 2008 Gonzalez caught 57 balls for over 600 yards and 4 touchdowns for an average of 12 yards per reception.  I like those numbers.  The one thing that is interesting here is that although Marvin Harrison had a below average season, partly due to Peyton Manning’s aggravations and because of Harrison’s off the field distractions, due to that, Anthony Gonzalez and Peyton had a chance to learn each other in game situations.  Given, Gonzalez was not a super-star last season, but because of that he went somewhat un-noticed and should be the #1 reason why you should be able to pick up Gonzalez in round 6 of your fantasy football draft and give your team a round 3 value type of fantasy football wide receiver.  Next season Gonzalez will go higher in the draft than he does in this years draft due to notoriety and Marvin Harrison not being on the team and getting the attention that Gonzalez should have gotten last year.
