San Lorenzo vs. Real Madrid Score, Report and Reaction from Club World Cup Final

Michael CummingsDec 20, 2014

Real Madrid are world champions following a 2-0 victory over San Lorenzo on Saturday in the FIFA Club World Cup final in Marrakech, Morocco.

Sergio Ramos put Real Madrid in front with a 37th-minute header before Gareth Bale doubled the lead early in the second half.

For Real Madrid, it's a 22nd consecutive victory in all competitions and a first Club World Cup title. With their 2014 schedule completed, the Blancos will return to Madrid with their fourth trophy of the calendar year following wins in the Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup.

With their first world championship in hand, Real will now turn their attention back to winning silverware at home and in Europe. The Blancos have built a one-point lead—with a game in hand—over Barcelona in Spain's Primera Liga and qualified for the Champions League knockout phase with a 100 per cent record in the group stage.

Following the winter break, Real will try to extend their impressive winning run when they play at Valencia in a Liga match on Jan. 4.

With a world title on the line in Marrakech, the two teams drew battle lines early on. Real Madrid held the majority of possession as San Lorenzo defended resolutely. Before 10 minutes were gone, the contest had become somewhat bad tempered as Real took exception to the Argentinian side's physical approach.

Real's first chance came in the first minute, as Cristiano Ronaldo rolled a cross inches too far for Karim Benzema in front of goal. Ronaldo then had a free-kick deflected into the hands of San Lorenzo goalkeeper Sebastian Torrico four minutes later.

San Lorenzo continued to frustrate their more illustrious opponents, who struggled to create clear chances consistently as the first half progressed. Ronaldo had another free-kick deflected off target in the 28th minute, and Benzema saw a low shot saved 10 minutes later.

When the opening goal did arrive in the 37th minute, it came from a set piece. Toni Kroos curled in a corner from the left, dropping the ball into a dangerous area directly in front of goal. Ramos, who had slipped free of his marker, nodded in past Torrico from the edge of the six-yard box.

Having struggled to break down San Lorenzo's resistance throughout the first half, Real Madrid doubled their lead shortly after the break. The goal owed plenty to an error by Torrico, who was unable to hold Bale's tame effort from inside the box. Instead, the ball squeezed under Torrico's body and nestled in the back of the net for a 2-0 Madrid advantage.

San Lorenzo's first real chance followed soon after, a Enzo Kalinski volleyed over the bar from outside the box in the 53rd minute. At the other end, Benzema won possession outside the San Lorenzo box before firing a snap shot wide of the far post. Benzema had another good chance in the 73rd minute, but the Frenchman volleyed off target from a Bale cross on the right.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas was called into action in the 84th minute. After spending most of the night as a spectator, Casillas did well to keep out a dipping drive from Kalinski. The Spain international saved again three minutes later, sprawling to stop Juan Mercier's high drive from distance.

But that was as close as San Lorenzo came to scoring, and in truth, the match was all but finished following the second goal. After seeing out the closing moments without incident, it was official: Real Madrid were world champions.
