Reasons Why Aaron Ramsey Can Fire Arsenal to Glory in 2015 and Beyond

Charlie MelmanDec 20, 2014

Aaron Ramsey was by far Arsenal's best player last season. Though he has not quite hit his previous heights this time around, there is reason to believe that he can be the Gunners' powerhouse once again.

The Welshman has been in fine form recently, though his best spell of the season was just cut short with the news (via Arsenal.com) that he might miss the busy Christmas docket of games.

However, he will be back just about in time for 2015. With that in mind, let's see why Ramsey can drive Arsenal to success in the months and even years ahead.

He Works Well with Mesut Ozil

Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil are perfect foils for each other. Unfortunately, they have not been able to play in the same midfield for very long, due to injuries to one or both.

Ozil is much less mobile and prefers to drift around the front line, finding pockets of space and threading passes while static.

Ramsey is creative but not in the same way. He is a box-to-box midfielder, just the sort of player that generally thrives in the Premier League. He makes chances largely with effort and tireless running—sometimes actually attempting to do too much. Ramsey's key advantage is his eye for goal, which Ozil does not quite have.

The prospect of having both fit and in the same team should make Arsenal fans' mouths water.

He's Coming Back in Form

Everyone saw Ramsey's thunderous volley against Galatasaray, which was reminiscent of similarly magical goals against Liverpool and Norwich last season.

That was not, however, an entirely isolated moment of brilliance. Ramsey had been inching back to his best for several games, after floundering for most of the campaign.

He might not retain that momentum after he returns from injury in a few weeks, but then again he remained in form after a much longer absence last season. Ramsey regained his old form immediately and helped propel Arsenal to an FA Cup title.

So there is reason to think that Arsenal will get a reinvigorated Ramsey in a few weeks' time.

He Will Have More Support Behind Him

Arsenal have had to cope with an injury-ravaged midfield for almost the entire season, but many players are due back in the near future.

Perhaps most importantly, Mikel Arteta should have recovered from his latest calf problem by the time Ramsey gets back into the team.

The Spaniard's return means that Ramsey will not have to be as active in defense, as the Gunners will have a more solid foundation. Arteta takes care of distribution and snuffs out threats before they materialize, taking the burden off of everyone else.

People underestimate how painful Arteta's absence has been for the entire squad, especially Ramsey. Arsenal need him to remain fit.

He Will Be Rested

We rarely consider a recuperative break to be a collateral benefit of an injury. But Ramsey will conveniently be missing the busiest period of the season, during which Arsenal will play a brutal four games in 10 days.

That's bad news for Arsenal in the short term: They won't have one of their best players during several important games.

But it also means that Ramsey will be fresh when he returns to the squad and can inject the team with energy when they face other exhausted sides.

Ramsey probably would have played in most or all of those four games, running the risk of injuring himself due to fatigue. His injury on Boxing Day last season probably torpedoed Arsenal's title chances more than anything else.

So Arsenal will get a fit and rested Ramsey, presumably in form and ready to go for the crucial Champions League push.
