Drake Mixes Up Donald Sterling and Adam Silver During 'Drake Night' in Toronto
"Drake Night" is a fixture in Toronto, an evening when the Raptors hand the Air Canada Centre keys over to Drake as a way of thanking him for his unending service as the franchise's "global brand ambassador."
It's all Drake, all the time, and the second annual event had the rapper conducting player introductions and giving interviews during Wednesday night's game against the Brooklyn Nets.
The Drake activities went smoothly, barring an awkward moment when he referred to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
The mix-up occurred after Drake joined the Raptors broadcast team for a courtside interview. The rapper was asked about his run-in with league officials after making a public plea for Kevin Durant to come to Toronto—something Drake is not permitted to do as an official member of the Raptors franchise.
Next Impulse Sports spotted video of the incident, posted by YouTube user Joe Perovich. Drake laughed off the broadcaster's question, saying he and "Sterling" are friends.
"Sterling, that's my guy," Drake said.
In fairness to Drake, these things happen to every person all the time.
You refer to your girlfriend as your mom. You mean "Javier Bardem" but say "Benicio Del Toro." It happens.
There's also the precious metal angle. "Sterling" and "silver" have gone hand in hand ever since boyfriends began giving blood plasma to cover the cost of jewelry in blue boxes. They're not interchangeable, but the words often intertwine.
On the bright side, the Raptors handled the floundering Brooklyn Nets 105-89. Best of all, they brought back the purple Raptors uniforms.
All things considered, Drake has had worse nights.
