Donald WoodDec 18, 2014

For the wrestling fans who haven't yet fallen in love with the unique style of Lucha Underground, this week’s episode was another example of how the new federation is making waves in the industry with great storytelling and even better in-ring action.

On this Wednesday’s show, Lucha Underground owner Dario Cueto announced there would be two 10-man matches. He also hinted that something big was in store for the two men (Sexy Star was also involved in the episode) who won their respective bouts.

The something big will be the inaugural Lucha Underground Championship match, which will take place in three weeks.

Breaking Down This Week’s Episode

Lucha Underground is one of the most exciting wrestling shows on television today, and this Wednesday’s episode was no different. With Cueto announcing the first champion will be crowned in three weeks, excitement is growing by the day.

The first 10-man match was a wild battle to be won by the first pinfall or submission, but the bout was about so much more than one man winning. While Fenix stole the show with a victory, the match also furthered storylines between Prince Puma vs. Big Ryck, King Cuerno vs. Drago and Mascarita Sagrada vs. El Mariachi Loco.

Prince Puma was highlighted throughout this bout, but he was eventually pinned by Fenix due to the injuries he had suffered in the Ladder match the previous week. Puma was also chastised later in the show by his mentor, Konnan.

In the second match of the night, nine men and Sexy Star battled in an over-the-top-rope Battle Royal. Again, Lucha Underground did a great job of using the chaos of this match to further storylines, such as Sexy Star vs. Chavo Guerrero, but it also managed to tease possible future angles, such as Johnny Mundo vs. Mil Muertes.

The Battle Royal was eventually narrowed down to Mundo against Muertes, and Muertes cleared his opponent from this ring with a huge clothesline.

As Muertes and Fenix waited in the ring to find out what they had won, Cueto entered the arena with a championship belt. He explained that there will be an Aztec Warfare match to crown the new champion in three weeks. He then put Muertes and Fenix in a match, with the winner entering the championship match 20th and the loser entering first.

It wasn't confirmed, but all signs point to the title bout being a Royal Rumble-style battle with wrestlers entering at intervals. More details about the match and the possible entrants will be revealed over the coming weeks.

The main event between Muertes and Fenix was a classic battle between an agile and fast smaller fighter and a bona fide powerhouse. The match featured plenty of high spots from Fenix, but the power of Muertes was just too much. Muertes picked up the win with a flatliner.

With more questions than answers about the title and what stipulations will be attached to the championship match, wrestling fans who have been watching since Day 1 are fully immersed in the promotion and can’t get enough. Lucha Underground is doing a great job of bringing people in and keeping them there with elite action and intriguing stories.

Several other top promotions in the country lack the ability to tell smart and fundamental stories with their programming, which is something that has been missing from wrestling. Lucha Underground gives fans something they can get behind, and that is what will make the company a success.

This was another great episode, and it has built legitimate excitement for next week.
