Week 5: CFL Quarterback Rankings
1 (LW 4) Ricky Ray
He completed 23 of 27 passes for 363 yards and three TDs and one interception in a 33-19 victory over Montreal. Ray was amazingly accurate and showed us the Ricky Ray of past seasons this week. He has been steadily moving up the rankings from five to four to one in the matter of three weeks. He appears to have his mind set on winning the Grey Cup this season. As things go now his opponent will likely be Henry Burris and his Stampeders in the West.
2 (LW 3) Darian Durant
He completed 17 of 28 passes for 257 yards and three TDs and one interception in a close 24-23 defeat of the Calgary Stampeders. For a quarterback whom was beginning to be the root of the problem as far as Rider fans were concerned, he has shown a great deal of life in the past two weeks. The Roughriders can only hope that he can continue this upward climb as the West is definitely the "wild west" this season.
3 (LW 2) Henry Burris
He completed 17 of 28 passes for 224 yards and one TD in a 24-23 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Once again Burris is amongst the top three quaterbacks in the CFL this week. Thus far he has been the most consistent of the quarterbacks this season. Expect to see him in the top three for much of the season as he is a premier passer in the CFL.
4 (LW --) Michael Bishop
He completed 16 of 30 passes for 213 yards with one TD and one interception in a much needed 13-12 defeat of the Argonauts by the Blue Bombers. Winnpeg Head Coach Mike Kelly can relax a little this week while his team sits at a hopeful two wins and three losses on the season as opposed to a one and four start. Bishop came exactly as billed, effective when he does not try to force the play. The real test will come for Bishop in the next couple weeks to see if he can play consistently well. If I was a betting man I would say he will fall back into his old inconsistent ways.
5 (LW 5) Quinton Porter
He completed 17 of 31 passes for 171 yards with one TD and one interception in a 30-18 defeat of the BC Lions. For the first time in two weeks Porter completed the entire game for the Tiger Cats while Kevin Glenn sat on the sidelines. By no means was this a defining game for Porter as he was a benefactor of DeAndra Cobbs 167 yards rushing and two TDs. Porter however is stil developing into a dangerous CFL quarterback and may need a week to watch a veteran in Glenn work the field.
6 (LW 1) Anthony Calvillo
He completed 28 of 34 passes for 236 yards during Montreal's 33-19 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos and a red hot Ricky Ray. Calvillo was still a very effective player in moving the ball upfield this week, however Montreal finally has their first loss of the season. Expect Montreal to bounce back next week against Toronto and come out with the win.
7 (LW 7) Buck Pierce
He completed 23 of 36 passes for 282 yards with one TD and two interceptions in a 30-18 defeat by Hamilton. In a much more effective perfomance than last week Pierce still could not lead his team to the win over a much improved Hamilton squad. Once again Pierce needs to be sitting on the sidelines during week sixes game against Saskatchewan. Wally Buono does appear to be fed up and has indicated that there will be changes to his line up for this week.
8 (LW 6) Kerry Joseph
He completed 20 of 32 passes for 219 yards with one TD and four interceptions in a 13-12 loss to the lowly Blue Bombers. Joseph was also sacked three times during this game and saw his running backs generate two fumbles. Overall this was a game to forget for the Agros. The storyline of the week was Bishop against Joseph, whom both competed for the starters job in Toronto just one season ago. Joseph needs to regain his MOP form if Toronto expects to be contenders this season.
Week five saw some fall from grace and some steadily improve themselves and their teams. I do not expect to see Buck Pierce behind the center during the opening snap of the Lions game in week six.
