Dzeko Injures Calf Before Leicester Match
Saturday, Dec. 13
Manchester City need a victory over Leicester City Saturday to keep pace with Chelsea in the EPL table, but the Citizens will have to press on without star striker Edin Dzeko.
According to the club's official Twitter account, the Bosnia-Herzegovina national was left out of the starting lineup after getting injured in warm-ups:
Per Ben Dinnery of ESPNFC.com, the 28-year-old forward aggravated a calf ailment:
After the match, manager Manuel Pellegrini discussed the injury, according to Sky Sports:
"“Edin has a muscle injury in his calf, so maybe both will be more than a couple of weeks.
"We must find a reason why. It is very unlucky to have three of them with muscle injuries.
[...]
"It is impossible that Vincent and Edin will be ready before the new year. We will see with Vincent but I think it will be very difficult for them to both play again this year.
"
Dzeko's absence means 18-year-old Jose Pozo will step in and be asked to pick up some of the scoring slack. With that said, though, Manchester City possess enough firepower as a team to thrive without Dzeko on the pitch.
City is clearly a far more talented team than Leicester, which means there may not be a ton of concern about their ability to come out on top. If this injury keeps Dzeko out for multiple matches, however, it could severely damage the Sky Blues' drive to the top of the standings.
