15 Times Justin Bieber Has Haunted Sports
What does it mean to haunt something? One definition is basically just to be around a lot. Using that criterion, Justin Bieber is definitely haunting sports.
The Biebs has gotten the reputation as a bit of a curse over the years—just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the New York Jets after Bieber attended a team event the night before. But maybe we should cut this kid a break. He’s not necessarily a curse—he’s just around a lot.
To be clear, Bieber has been spotted at sporting events way more than 15 times. He’s been in more than 15 social media posts involving athletes. But in general, here are some of the more prominent times he’s shown up in our beloved sports world. Beware—it just gets more random as you go.
Patriots at Clippers Game
Apparently, the New England Patriots agree that Bieber is not a curse.
The team was in Southern California for a week leading up to its victory over the San Diego Chargers on December 7, 2014. When the players weren’t practicing, they were entertaining themselves, in part, by attending a Los Angeles Clippers game.
Who else was at the game? You guessed it—Biebs. Pats players like Rob Gronkowski and Shane Vereen posed with the singer in the locker room after the game, curse be damned.
At the same Clippers game where he ran into the Patriots, Bieber also had time to chit chat with Blake Griffin.
You can’t hear what they’re talking about in the video, but Bieber seems pretty passionate. But seriously, what are they talking about?
Hook ‘em Horns
So, it’s unclear why Bieber was at the University of Texas in early 2014, but he was. He stayed long enough to pose for this photo with head basketball coach Rick Barnes.
Texas fans couldn’t have been too happy about this.
It’s not enough that Bieber invades sporting events on a regular basis—he has also shown up at sports’ big night.
In 2011, Bieber presented the award for Best Team at the ESPYs, alongside Danica Patrick. His then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, was in attendance as well.
My first thought here was, “Why in the world would Justin Bieber be practicing with FC Barcelona?”
After a little digging, I found out that Bieber donned some Barcelona swag at one of his concerts in Madrid back in 2011. According to Daily Mail, Barcelona caught wind of this act of defiance and promptly invited Biebs to attend a training session with the team.
Jay Williams played basketball at Duke and later for the Chicago Bulls. He’s now an analyst on ESPN as well as, apparently, a Belieber.
It also appears the two played one-on-one at some point back in 2009. So random.
Seriously, Justin Bieber is everywhere. He's even in with the NBA’s beloved and reigning MVP. The Biebs posted this photo to his Instagram account in July 2014.
Apparently, the two had brunch together? Also, Biebs wore a Nets hat, which is a bit shocking given his tendency to cater his wardrobe to his immediate situation.
Ringside with Mayweather
Justin Bieber has a well-known friendship with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two have been seen together way too many times to count. However, on one of the earlier occasions, Bieber was ringside at Mayweather’s 2012 bout against Miguel Cotto.
The singer apparently hung out in the locker room before the fight, carried two championship belts to the ring and had an up-close-and-personal view of the fight.
He was also ringside for Mayweather’s 2014 fight against Marcos Maidana.
Oh, and also, apparently Bieber is now learning how to box from Mayweather.
Much to the sports world’s dismay, it appears Bieber might actually have some athletic talent.
Recently, he posted a Vine of a goal he scored in a men’s hockey league. Then, just a week later, there was this one of him making a bunch of trick basketball shots.
Maybe the world will cut him a break now that he’s proving to be somewhat athletic? Yeah, probably not.
Party with Manziel
If he’s not bringing the Biebs to the sports, then the sports are coming to him.
In June 2014, Bieber threw a party at his house in Beverly Hills, and both Johnny Manziel and Floyd Mayweather were in attendance. According to TMZ, the police showed up in response to noise complaints.
New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert attended New York Fashion Week with Bieber and Jon Wall in 2014. Yes, this happened.
Later, Shumpert made this terrifying video of himself wearing a Bieber head. If that isn’t haunting, then I don’t know what is.
Haunting His Own Team
Bieber is a self-proclaimed fan fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Knowing this, someone at the Dallas Stars decided to use that little nugget to mock the Leafs. When Toronto visited Dallas for a game in January 2014, Bieber had recently been arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Dallas had a little good-hearted fun with its opponent by plastering Bieber’s mugshot on the Jumbotron with the caption “Maple Leafs Fan.” The team also posted this photo of Biebs to its official Instagram account after the second period. Cheeky.
Steelers Bible Study
Bieber attended a Pittsburgh Steelers team Bible study the day before the Steelers lost to the Jets—yes, the Jets—in November 2014. Naturally, questions arose about whether the Biebs had a negative effect on the players.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger addressed distraction rumors on his radio show on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, stating, via ESPN, “That's not a big deal at all. For instance, [former Steelers wide receiver] Plaxico Burress stopped by. Obviously he's family, but people stop by all of the time and say, 'Hi,' and we've had other athletes, actors, celebrities, stuff like that stop by. It's not a big deal at all.”
Most hockey fans know about the unofficial rule regarding locker room logos. That is, don’t step on them. Justin Bieber, a Canadian who says he’s a hockey fan, should presumably know this rule.
Well, he certainly forgot it in Chicago in 2013. Shortly after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, Bieber was in town to perform a concert at the United Center. Naturally, he wanted to see the Stanley Cup and snap a few photos. Unfortunately for him (and the Blackhawks), Bieber was caught on film standing on the team logo in the locker room.
When Biebs traveled to Boston a week later to perform at the TD Garden, the Bruins proactively roped off the team logo. Hilarious.
