Can ROH Take Advantage of the Wounded Carcass That Is TNA?
First off I want to apologize for the picture. Not that I'm apologizing for a picture of the 16 time World Heavyweight Champion The Nature Boy Ric Flair, its the fact that this is the only picture I could find that had any relevance to ROH.
Sad but true. And I know he is no longer the ambassador to the company and that has caused a lot of turmoil with some, but its the best I could find.
Now, back to the subject at hand. When ROH finally got their television contract back in March, if you could call HDNET a television contract, I was introduced to mat wrestling like I had not seen since the days of PAUL HEYMAN'S beloved ECW.
I can still hear the chants in my head. These guys in ROH, no matter their place on the roster, were coming out and giving four-star matches every week no matter the time allotted to them.
Young, hungry, wrestlers who had that spark in their eye like we haven't seen in a long long time. These guys were not household names: Austin Aries-there current champion, Tyler Black, Brian Danielson, Mr. Wrestling himself Kevin Steen, El Generico, I could go on and on. Tag teams like The American Wolves who remind us of the old days of the British Bulldogs and The Hart Foundation.
These guys are putting together moves I have NEVER seen before, and I've been watching this beloved sport for over 25 years. Every match your jaw is guaran-dam-teed to drop (I had to get that one in; I miss the Great One).
Now, through the grapevine, the same one where the little birdies hang out that tell us the rumors we love to spread about wrestling, I have heard the cable channel FX is looking to get into the wrestling business.
Hopefully not the 'rastlin business but the WRESTLING business. They are seeing Spike's numbers grow with TNA, how?, I'll leave that to you guys to debate, and the strong numbers Vince continues to receive especially with the 18-34 male demographic that the advertisers love to go after.
If this rumor has any truth to it, who else could you look towards besides ROH. They are a distant third, but with TNA continuing to have problems, that could possibly change.
Not that fans would just stop watching TNA, even WCW's last year, which was one of the worst years of professional wrestling I have ever witnessed, fans still tuned in.
The average wrestling fan doesn't know what's going on behind the scenes. If its not a story or an angle that is introduced to them on television, most fans don't write or share ideas and opinions like we do here on: The Bleacher Report CHEAP POP.
So, I can see TNA having serious problems when it comes to money and talent especially if this Jarrett, Angle, Karen thing has any truth to it. We have seen in the past how egos, jealousy, and poor booking and management has destroyed other companies.
This could be the perfect time for fans to get introduced to something different. RING OF HONOR has stated time and time again they don't want to compete with Vince. That is not their identity.
They want to be an alternative and give fans what they feel REAL wrestling fans want. I couldn't agree more.
Just this past month, during their tour of Canada the one and only Bret Hart, that's right The Best There Is, The Best There Was and The Best There Ever Will Be, accepted ROH's invitation and attended some of their house shows.
The now-blond Bret looked great and got a standing ovation as he cut an in ring promo pushing the young talent that ROH has to offer. Lance Storm also attended and even wrestled in his final Canadian appearance.
Talk about a wrestler who never got what he so richly DESERVED. Impact players like this, attending ROH shows will give it the credibility it needs and will create a buzz within the wrestling universe.
So if FX is looking and ROH is thinking of the future, it feels like a perfect fit. Th wrestlers on their roster deserve their time to shine.
Night after night their sweat and blood has earned them the respect of millions of fans out there. Lets see something in the business happen that's good for business as well as good for us and the Sport.
Thanks for reading, until the next time......
