Roma vs. Manchester City: Goals, Highlights from Champions League Tie

There were myriad confusing permutations that would see Manchester City qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

But essentially the Premier League champions knew they had to beat Roma (and CSKA Moscow had to falter at Bayern Munich) to qualify. 

The scores were level after an entertaining but uneventful first half at the Stadio Olimpico, giving the hosts the upper hand. 

On the hour mark, however, Samir Nasri threw the Citizens a lifeline by opening the scoring with a superb strike.

The Frenchman took possession on the left-hand side before heading towards goal and unleashing an unstoppable right-footed drive inside the near post.

Four minutes from time, Pablo Zabaleta put the game—and qualification—beyond the reach of the Italians with a low shot, assisted by Nasri.

The game finished 2-0 to the visitors, who turned in one of their better Champions League performances to advance to the knockout rounds.

Roma, meanwhile, will be playing their European football on a Thursday night for the foreseeable future.
