Aaron Ramsey and Arsenal's Top 6 Champions League Goals

James McNicholasDec 10, 2014

Aaron Ramsey stunned Europe with his stunning strike against Galatasaray. With the ball seemingly bouncing harmlessly away from goal, he struck a beautiful volley into the far top corner with his supposedly weaker left foot.

Ramsey's goal will almost certainly prove to be one of Arsenal's goals of the season, but where does it stand in the ranking of Arsenal's all-time best Champions League goals?

It's important to consider the context as well as the quality of the strike. Ramsey's goal took place in a relatively meaningless gamecould it be beaten by a goal on a more significant occasion?

Read on to find out.

6. Freddie Ljungberg vs. Juventus

1 of 6

This Freddie Ljungberg goal came in the group stage of 2001. It's memorable for two reasons. The first is the majesty of Dennis Bergkamp, who tormented his marker before playing an inch-perfect pass for Ljungberg to lob home.

The second is that this was a landmark night in Arsenal's European history. Juventus arrived as feared Italian giants, and they were dispatched by a blistering Gunners performance.

5. Lukas Podolski vs. Montpellier

2 of 6

As he showed against Galatasaray, Lukas Podolski has a hammer of a left foot. However, this goal is about more than just sheer power. It owes as much to the pinpoint chipped pass from Olivier Giroud that allows the German to smash the ball home on the volley.

This goal occurred during the group stage, but it stands out for its sheer quality.

4. Emmanuel Adebayor vs. Villarreal

3 of 6

Emmanuel Adebayor is no longer a popular figure at the Emirates Stadium, but that shouldn't be allowed to detract too much from this remarkable goal against Villarreal.

Coming in the 2009 Champions League quarter-final, this beautifully executed overhead kick earned Arsenal a valuable 1-1 draw in Spain.

3. Sol Campbell vs. Barcelona

4 of 6

Although this header from Sol Campbell is scored with typical power, it's not a particularly beautiful goal. However, it stands out because of the occasion: It was the goal that gave Arsenal the lead in the Champions League final.

Although the Gunners were ultimately undone by Barcelona, few Arsenal goals can have been celebrated as raucously as this.

2. Aaron Ramsey vs. Galatasaray

5 of 6

As far as pure strikes go, there are few better than Aaron Ramsey's against Galatasaray.

The fact he struck it with his wrong foot makes it tempting to write it off as a fluke. However, Ramsey has form for producing goals of this calibre with his weaker boot: He scored a spectacular long-range goal for the Welsh U21s side against their English counterparts in 2008.

It might not have come in a high-pressure environment, but it remains a jaw-dropping moment of technical brilliance.

1. Thierry Henry vs. Real Madrid

6 of 6

This surely remains the greatest goal in Arsenal's Champions League history.

Not only was it the consequence of a surging run from the halfway line, but it gave Arsenal a priceless win at the Bernabeu that helped them on the way to the 2006 Champions League final.

What do you think is Arsenal's greatest Champions League goal? Who should have made the list? Let us know below.
