Newton Battles Ankle Soreness

Saturday, Jan. 3

A tumultuous season for Newton continued on Jan. 3, as he suffered from ankle soreness after the Panthers' 27-16 Wild Card Round win over the Arizona Cardinals

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided the details:

"

Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell stepped on Newton's left ankle, the one that was surgically repaired in March. (Unlike last Sunday’s notorious numb-footed leg step, this one was fully inadvertent.)

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Newton’s ankle was sore after the game, but he said he’ll be fine.

"

Newton had 198 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Carolina's ugly win over the Cardinals. If the Panthers want to advance past the next round, a healthy Newton is necessary.

If he's forced to miss any time, veteran Derek Anderson will fill in under center. He has 701 yards and five touchdowns in two starts this season under center.
