How Much Is Manchester City's Sergio Aguero Worth in Current Transfer Market?

Daniel EdwardsDec 10, 2014

Manchester City's extraordinary forward Sergio Aguero has never come cheap. Since bursting onto the scene with Independiente at just 15 years old back in 2003, the Bernal native has enjoyed two lucrative transfers.

Atletico Madrid shelled out an estimated 20 million for the teenager's services in 2006, according to ESPN FC, smashing the record previously set for Italian hit man Christian Vieri.

That massive sum for a kid still only 17 may have been a gamble, not least for a club looking to replace a striker of Fernando Torres' calibre. But Aguero soon proved he had the mettle for La Liga.

After an unsurprisingly slow first season as El Kun adapted to his new surroundings, from 2007/08 onwards the Argentinian was an inspiration in the Vicente Calderon.

His final numbers over five seasons with Atletico gave him a total of 101 goals in 234 matches. Taking out that first year, his record would be a brilliant 94 in 192, giving Aguero a strike-rate just shy of one every two games.

That form, accompanied by a Europa League title in 2009/10 as well as a European Super Cup, meant another big-money deal was almost inevitable. Manchester City were the team that swooped first, seeing in Aguero the consistent goalscorer who could spearhead their challenge to a first-ever Premier League title.

From €20 million the first time round, Aguero five years later was moving in a blockbuster £35 million (€45 million) deal to north-west England, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Two Premier League titles since 2011, and a total of 94 strikes in just 141 games would suggest City have already received decent value for money from the deal. But, if he were to leave to tomorrow, what would Aguero be worth right now?

Possible Clubs

Combined, Aguero's two transfers have set his employers back a total of €65 million. It is not hard to imagine that any possible fee in 2014 would top those two sales put together, obviously limiting the number of teams that could feasibly be in the market for the Argentinian.

Despite his links to Atletico and the uproar it would cause in the Colchonero part of the Spanish capital, Real Madrid would have to be considered as one of the strongest potential suitors.

Madrid have the financial firepower and the global fanbase to support a signing of this stature without compromising their economic wellbeing, and such a move was indeed floated over the summer transfer silly season.

More than £85 million, or upwards of 100 million, for Aguero, Los Merengues were told back in May according to the Daily Express. This would break the world transfer record, also held by the team marshalled by Florentino Perez when they splashed out for ex-Tottenham winger Gareth Bale

It is hardly surprising City played hardball for their star. Aguero scores top-level goals at a rate currently only matched by the phenomenal achievements of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

With Dubai oil money ensuring that there is no need to balance the books as Atletico had to three years ago the Sky Blue response was clear: El Kun will not leave for anything less than an unprecedented fee.

A fee of such scale, incidentally, likely put paid to any chances Barca had of tempting the striker back to Catalunya.

Aguero's father had told the Spanish press back in June that he would "love" a Barcelona move, as reported by Charles Reynolds in the Express, but the Blaugrana ultimately declined to make a move for the player in favour of Luis Suarez.

It is difficult to see Luis Enrique's men, with a forward line made up of the Uruguayan, Neymar and La Pulga, return with a move for El Kun in the foreseeable future.

Aguero's Current Transfer Value

Manchester City's current stance on their star leaves little room for doubt. If Real Madrid, or any other club, want to take the prolific goalscorer away from the Etihad Stadium it will take a record-shattering bid; no less than €100 million will suffice.
