Mike Scifres Injury: Updates on Chargers Punter's Shoulder and Return

San Diego Chargers punter Mike Scifres was carted off the field after suffering a shoulder injury on blocked punt during the team's Week 14 loss to the New England Patriots. He underwent surgery on Dec. 8. The Chargers placed him on the IR in Week 17.

Scifres Hits IR

The Chargers provide an update on Scifres' status:

The Chargers reinforced the offensive line Saturday, promoting center Jeff Baca to the active roster from the practice squad. In doing so, they had to place punter Mike Scifres on the reserve-injured list with a shoulder injury suffered in Week 14.

The team also confirmed the news on Scifres via their Twitter account.

Head coach Mike McCoy later spoke on Scifres, saying that the decision on injured reserve would be made later in the week, via Gehlken.

Nick Novak Replaces Scifres vs. Patriots

The team announced that kicker Nick Novak would take Scifres' place before revealing Scifres would not return:

After the game, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald noted Scifres was wearing a sling to support his arm. 

Coming into Week 14, Scifres punted the ball 54 times, averaging 45.7 yards a punt and boasting a 39.5-yard net average.
