Arsenal took the lead against Rangers within two minutes thanks to Jack Wilshere. Eduardo doubled the lead in the 10th minute with a smooth left-footed finish.

Feyenoord 2 - NEC 0 (Eredivisie, August 2, 2009) Jon Dahl Tomasson capitalised on a poor defensive header to round the keeper and fire Feyenoord in front at home to NEC. A penalty from Leroy Fer doubled the score.

Groningen 0 - Ajax 2 (Eredivisie, August 2, 2009) Miralem Sulejmani and Dennis Rommedahl were the goal scorers in either half for Martin Jol’s side.
