Take Notice of Brock Bond

Tom DubberkeAug 2, 2009

Brock Bond is a 23 year old 2Bman playing at the Giants’ AA team, the Connecticut Defenders.  He’s on a 15 game hitting streak and is now leading the Eastern League in batting average (.359), OBP (.451), and runs scored (70).  His OBP is 3o points higher than the next best player in his league, and his .881 OPS is good for 6th in the league, which is particularly impressive if you remember than Bond has little power.

With Matt Downs (.824 OPS) and Kevin Frandsen (.796 OPS) more than adequately manning the middle infield positions in Fresno, Bond will probably be forced to spend the rest of the year in Connecticut.  If Bond plays at Fresno next year the way he’s played at Connecticut this year, he will either force the Giants to trade Freddie Sanchez by the 2010 trade deadline, or he will be Sabean’s (or Sabean’s successor’s) trade chip to fill a hole for the 2010 pennant chase.

Keep an eye out for him in Spring Training next year also.  He could end up being Freddie Sanchez’s back-up next year, although Uribe, Velez, Downs and Frandsen are all ahead of him as I write this.
