Fluker Suffers Concussion in Practice
San Diego Chargers offensive tackle D.J. Fluker suffered a concussion in Wednesday's practice. He did not practice Thursday, and his status for Week 14's game against the New England Patriots is in question.
Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reported the news:
Fluker will be entered into the NFL's concussion protocol. He will have to be cleared by an independent neurologist before returning to the field, which makes the timing of his injury all the more important.
Willie Smith, who has yet to appear in a game in 2014, will likely start if Fluker is unable to go. In his fourth season out of East Carolina, the former undrafted free agent has made 10 career starts, though none have come since 2012.
Fluker, a second-year player from Alabama, has made 27 of a possible 28 starts since being drafted last season. He's largely failed to develop into an anchor San Diego expected but has been a solid enough right tackle opposite King Dunlap.
Pro Football Focus' stats database (subscription required) ranks Fluker as one of the NFL's 10 worst pass-blocking offensive tackles. According to The Washington Post, Fluker has been penalized seven times this season, already one more than his rookie campaign.
