Magic Rookie Elfrid Payton Airmails 2 Consecutive Free Throws Against Clippers
There’s a lot to like about Elfrid Payton.
The Orlando Magic rookie handles the ball well and hounds opponents on the defensive end. Plus, his hair is the subject of Nick Young’s most rapturous night fevers. He has plenty going for him—minus the whole part where he throws the ball through the cylinder.
For a 6'4" guard, Payton is unimaginably bad at free-throw shooting, averaging 45 percent from the line this season. He showed once again how his charity shots continue to be a work in progress during Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
CBS Sports’ James Herbert uploaded video of Payton air-balling not one but two free-throw attempts in quick succession.
The first air ball drew groans. The second left people incredulous.
It’s an ugly look for Bill Simmons’ Rookie of the Year pick. The Grantland founder put all his chips on Payton in October, saying that he’s “all-in on Elfrid.”
And Simmons isn’t wrong to be this high on Payton. The 20-year-old former Louisiana-Lafayette star is an exciting player with high upside and all those additional buzz phrases we slap on young talent that has yet to round out the rough edges.
But, sir—Bill—your man needs to pack a lunch and go live on the free-throw line in between games. There are children watching these games, and these misses are graphic.
